Six on Sunday
Week #26 March 3, 2024
Show-and-Tell Tomorrow, Monday, March 4!
1. February 23 Guidance Lesson Highlights
Today we discussed peer pressure (one of the Protective Factors to substance abuse prevention) and thought carefully about the influences around us. We agreed as a class that it is okay to say “no” to negative peer pressure and that it is best to choose our friends wisely as they have a big influence on us.
Targets for this lesson:
Students will be able to understand the influences others have on thoughts and behaviors..
Students will be able to define peer pressure and discuss examples from everyday life.
2. March 1st Guidance Lesson Highlights
Today we discussed how “Peer Pressure” can be negative or positive.
Target for this lesson:
- Know what to do or say when people are pressuring you to do something that makes you feel uncomfortable.
We practiced some of the following ways to say no to peer pressure:
Explain the consequences
Just say "No"
Walk away
Suggest another activity
Blame it on your family
Change the subject
I also wanted to share the video that we've been listening to as our "theme song" for this series of classroom guidance. 4th Grade Classroom Guidance Theme Song
3. New Chapter Book Read Aloud - Number the Stars by Lois Lowry
4. Economics Unit
This week your economist worked hard. Small groups went through the process of planning, naming, and building a prototype product. Next they cooperated to see how many products they could produce in 10 minutes! It was eye-opening, exciting, and energizing. Later in the week we began to consider our interests, skills, and strengths. Finally, we practiced interviewing each other for three minute intervals. Together we planned three interview questions, role-played what a strong interview could look like, and tried it out!
5. BizTown Field Trip Information
We travel to Junior Achievement's BizTown on Friday, March 22!
1. Our bus leaves OV at 8:50 a.m.
2. We bring a packed lunch from home or a pre-ordered lunch from school (indicate this on your permission slip).
3. Permission slips came home last Friday, March 1.
4. Cost is $8, thanks to our generous PTO who brought this down from $18 by donating $10 per child.
5. We do need adult chaperones to join us. Chaperones attend for free, but need to attend a training session from 8-9 a.m. the morning of the trip at the BizTown location!
6. We return to OV by 1:50.
6. Gone Boarding Program Begins
Friday was the first of our three sessions with Forest Hills High School Gone Boarding students! They visited to teach us about this class and its exciting opportunities. Even more importantly, they spent time working with small groups of fourth graders teaching about what it takes to be a real life hero. Your fourth grader worked, with their help, to decide what character traits everyday heroes exemplify. We look forward to our next two Friday with these inspirational, awesome high schoolers!
