What did independence mean for singapore?

On 9 August 1965 ,our prime minister, the late Mr Lee Kuan Yew, announced to the people that singapore was no longer part of Malaysia.Although, our first National Day Parade was held on 4 june 1960, Singapore actually celebrated our first independent National day parade on 9 August 1966. So what did it actually mean for singapore in 1965 when we were separated from Malaysia?

The reponses and feelings of singaporean during that time

Separation is a relief for the People's Action Party (PAP) beacuse at that time they faced supression from Malaysia and the Malaysian government was unfair as they give special privileges to the Malays. Unfortunally, it came as a shock to the citizens of Singapore follow by disappointment and regrets.At that time, it affected some of the businesses between Singapore and Malaysia. Some even lost hope in the future of Singapore as Singapore did not have any economic resources.

The problems and changes that singapore went through after Independence

After the separation , the fledgling nation had to become self-sufficient, and faced problems including mass unemployment,internal and external security and lack of land and natural resources such as peroleum.


Mass unemployment

After the separation ,a lot of malay shop and company closed ,a lot of business entiteies has gone back to malaysia which result and the mass unemployment overnight .

Some of the indonesian saboteurs conducted a series of terrorism in singapore because singapore had no protect form malay.(as many as 37 bombings )

THEN ,the government built the f singapore own defence force by creating ministry of the interior defence (MID)

Lack of land and natural resources

Singapore was a samll country so that it did not have any natural resources .Thus, our ecnomy was unable to depend sloely on the export of natural resources.therefore, singapore had to bulit up a diversified to continued its ecnomic growth.
