Dare to be Different: FTMS East Student Announcements
Improvement in our Hallways
Upon our return to East the staff and the students have been working on improving our hallway behaviors. Specifically, we have focused on the following four areas:
- Appropriate and respectful conversations with adults and peers.
- Walking at an appropriate pace in the hallway without jumping, dodging, and chasing.
- Not congregating and creating congestion in the hallways.
- Having electronic devices put away in order to not distract students when walking to class.
In addition to having a focus on improvement we have also changed some processes to improve our hallway environment. One of the bigger changes was the removal of the music during passing period. Because the music was inconsistent, occasionally had inappropriate lyrics for a school environment, and forced students to shout over the volume, we eliminated its use for our bell system. While the music was fun, this change has led to quieter hallways, less tardies, and students' volume being more appropriate during passing period.
Overall, our focus and the process changes have led to improvements in our building. We will continue to ensure our school environment is supportive for the students and their learning. We appreciate your help and encourage you to continue guiding your student to be an outstanding student at FTMS East.

FTMS East Library Media Center News:
As the end of the school year approaches, the media center must collect all outstanding materials and/or fines to begin inventory. If a “lost” item is returned to the media center, the fine will change according to our policy. Fines are $0.05 per day per item. I will calculate the new fine amount and send a receipt home if the item is returned. There will be no more than $5 charged for an overdue (books that have been returned).
Since it is near the end of the year, your child’s fine will transfer to the next school year. Your child will have their account “restricted” until the fine is resolved. We strive to provide literature and resources for students’ research projects, book reports, and leisurely reading. It is my hope that each student can be responsible for the items they checkout. We discuss this topic at length throughout the year.
Library fines can be paid by cash or check. Checks can be made payable FTMS East. If you have any questions, please email or call the Library Media Center during school hours at 317-803-8170.
