The Benefits of Yoga

Ways that yoga can help students manage stress

Stress can happen when you feel you are being pulled in too many directions, or worrying about something that has happened. "Yoga, which derives its name from the word, “yoke”—to bring together—does just that, bringing together the mind, body and spirit" (Scott, 2014). Yoga has many aspects to it, whether you want to learn breathing techniques, stretches or how to mediate, yoga can help with you managing stress. .Everyone feels stress at some time or another in life, and learning how to deal with it in a positive way is important. A 2013 study found that "almost 46.3% of students surveyed reported that they have more than average or extreme stress" (Schuder, 2014). Stress can affect not only your health, but for students it may also affect their learning. I challenge you to use yoga in your own life when you are feeling stressed, or with your students on a weekly basis to help them learn to manage stress.
