January 19, 2018
We are wrapping up a busy week on campus with a fun filled night for our 6th grade at the Cotillion Dance. Thanks to all of our PTA volunteers for making Cotillion possible, additionally for the hours spent invested into our campus in various ways. We appreciate the strong partnership to make events like the fall and winter socials possible for our students.
Next week will be another event filled week as we have our Portrait of a Graduate (P.O.G.) activities for our students during our advisory time: 6th graders taking the StrengthsFinder assessment, 7th grade field trip to the Technical Education and Career Center (TECC) at Grapevine High School, and so much more! We look forward to another great week on campus and I hope that you enjoy the nicer weather and temperatures ahead. Enjoy your weekend!

Scoliosis Screening - January 22
Grapevine-Colleyville ISD
School Health Services
Date: January 19, 2018 School: Colleyville Middle School
Dear Parent/Guardian:
GCISD School Health Services will be conducting spinal screening for 8th graders on January 22, 2018. The purpose of spinal screening is to detect the signs of abnormal curves of the spine at their earliest stages so that the need for treatment can be determined. Scoliosis, a common spinal abnormality found in adolescents, is a sideways twisting of the spine. It is usually detected in children between ten and fourteen years of age. Kyphosis, sometimes called round back, is an exaggerated rounding of the upper back and is often confused with poor posture. Many cases of curvature of the spine are mild and require only ongoing observation by a physician when they are first diagnosed. Others can worsen with time as the child grows and require active treatment such as bracing or surgery. Early treatment can prevent the development of a severe deformity, which can affect a person’s health and appearance.
The procedure for screening is simple. Screeners who have been specially trained will look at your child’s back while he/she stands and then bends forward. For this examination, boys and girls will be seen separately and individually.
Boys will remove their shirts. Girls will remove their shirts, but are required to wear a swimsuit, tube top, halter top or bra underneath.
Parents will be notified of the results of the screening only if a second professional opinion is advisable. This screening procedure does not replace your child’s need for regular health care and check-ups.
According to law, all students in this age group are required to be screened. If for religious reasons you do not wish to have your child screened, you are required to submit a notarized affidavit of exemption to this office by Febuary 1, 2018. If you choose to select a health care provider of your choice to provide this screening you are required to submit a copy of the screening results signed by the physician on or before by Febuary 1, 2018. Students who do not present a signed, notarized form or signed physician’s note will be screened.
Thank you for your assistance.
Sincerely,
Sophia Martin, RN
School Nurse
