Camp Wolverine

First, I want to let you know we had to change the dates for Camp Wolverine. The camp did not have enough staff schedule for our original date, so we will be going on Jan. 22 and 23.

There is a packet of information and a letter from the 4th grade teachers about camp in the Friday Folder. Please look it over and let me know if you have any questions.

We are asking that permission slips and payment be turned in by Jan. 6. Parents, if you would like to attend we need to know by Jan. 6.

Reading

This week for reading students compared and contrasted a poem and a nonfiction text about a student with Down's Syndrome.

Students also continued their unit on character analysis.

Writing

This week for writing students wrote the final drafts of their personal narratives. They are hanging in the hall.

We ale started our new unit on persuasive writing and students got a brief introduction by writing a letter to Santa.

This week for language we learned about coordinating conjunctions. Don't worry I exposed your kids to School House Rock! They loved it! I've attached the YouTube link:

Math

This week in math we started learning how to multiply a 2-digit number by another 2-digit number. We started with multiplying tens and estimating products using rounding and compatible numbers. We also used area models and partial products to help prepare for multiplying with regrouping. Your child’s completed math test is enclosed in this week’s Fridayfolder.

Math Homework: Lessons 3.2 and 3.3

Science

This week we began learning about animals basic needs. We learned about adaptations that help animals survive and all about the digestion and circulatory systems in mammals. We worked in partners using diagrams to explain how both systems work. Please ask your child to tell you a little bit about each system.

Social Studies

This week in Social Studies we started a new unit on the Southeast. Students read about the Everglades National Park, Cape Canaveral and Jamestown, Virginia. We learned about the Jamestown settlement and students played a game to see if they would have survived living in the settlement.

Notepad Sales

We are still selling notepads to raise money for Camp Wolverine. Please consider buying a few for stocking stuffers or grocery lists to help support this fun field trip. There are more order forms in the Friday folders.

Report Cards

First trimester report cards are in the mail and you should be getting them today or tomorrow.

Our elementary has switched to a standards based grading system. There is a letter from Mr. Fairbanks explaining our new approach to grading. If you have any questions about the report card or your child's marks please contact me.

Christmas collection for the Little Traverse Bay Humane Society

This year instead of a classroom gift exchange 4th grade will be collecting donations for the Little Traverse Bay Humane Society. We are asking that all the 4th grade students donate an item or two of the Humane Society's wish list.

Feel free to send donations in any time between now and Dec. 18th!

This is a link to their wish list: http://www.ltbhs.com/volunteers/donate-supplies

I would like to contact the Humane Society to see if they could stop by with a few of their dogs in the afternoon of the 19th to pick up our donation. Please let me know if you child is allergic to dogs or cats or is afraid of dogs or cats. The students do not know about this yet...so they won't be dissappointed if the animals don't stop by.

Christmas Party

We will be having our classroom Christmas Party on Friday, Dec. 19. This year we will be doing a class breakfast in the morning. Mrs. Wilson has volunteered to help organize the party and will be contacting families about supplies and food for the breakfast. She is also planning to do a few snacks for the afternoon. If you don't get a call for the party, don't worry we still have Valentine's Day :)

Homework

  • Please have your child turn in the November reading calendar if he/she hasn't already done it.
  • Grammar sheet about commas in compound sentences
  • Spelling List and Homework for week 12
  • Math: Lesson 3.2 and 3.3
