Lil Steamer Families --
Happy September! Things at the Greatest Little Elementary School in the Universe are off to a good start! This week we completed our Fall AIMSweb benchmark testing for all students, Kindergarten classes learned about and celebrated the color orange, and we successfully conducted our first safety drills (tornado/severe weather) at the elementary school and preschool buildings.
Looking ahead during the month of September we have more Kindergarten color days, Homecoming Week, and other safety drills planned.
Speaking of safety, one thing I would like to address is our morning drop-off procedures. We all know that children can be unpredictable which makes it so important that we all work together to ensure their safety. Please stay in a single file line during the morning drop-offs and do not pull around cars where there is an opening ahead of them.
I know that this may add a few minutes to your morning drop-off time. But, adding a few minutes to ensure the safety of our students is well worth it. I know you would expect the same of other drivers to be vigilant with your child’s safety.
Enjoy the 3-day weekend, as we will not be in session on Monday, September 6 in recognition of Labor Day!

As I visit classrooms this month, we will focus on building a positive classroom community and promoting positive peer relationships. We will share some of our interests and discuss the importance of listening with attention. It never hurts to review listening skills with your children. Good listeners focus on the speaker’s words, ask questions to find out more, repeat back what they have heard, and never interrupt. It’s respectful to listen with attention as it helps you to learn and shows that you care about what others have to say.

What are the warning signs my child may have problems with speech?
Speech is how we say sounds and words. It is normal for young children to say some sounds the wrong way. Some sounds do not develop until a child is 4, 5, or 6 years old. Warning signs for a 2 and 3-year-old child include:
- · Not saying k, g, f, t, d, and n the right way in words most of the time
- Being hard to understand even to people who know the child well

We are family in 2C!
We have had a great start to the year in 2C! Not only are they new to 2nd grade but this is also my first year teaching 2nd grade after 12 years in Preschool and Special Education. This is going to be a great year for us to grow and learn together. Last week we really focused on the importance of being kind to others and how to develop relationships with those in our “School Family.” We read “Our Class is a Family” and talked the about importance of building a sense of community within the classroom by creating a home away from home where they can feel safe, loved, and included.
