PUSH vs Precious
theme: the human capacity to grow and overcome
PUSH (Precious)
Major Character Development
Minor Character devolpment
PLOT TWISTS (so to speak)
Homosexuality
Ms.Rain's openess of her homosexuality is so different then what we see in the book. There is a scene in class that Precrious blames homosexuals for all the sexual abuse that has happened in her life. Ms.Rain, then, argues that homosexuals have done no wrong to her, the real culprit/the only one to blame is her father. However in the movie, the director fails to include this classroom scene and Precrious is only aware by her homosexuality after she is invited into her home and meets her partner.
Critical dialogue
A crucial dialogue in the film that was absent within the movie that really struck me was the scene between Precrious and Mary (Her mother). Mary sneaks behind Precious to hit her with a frying pan and Precious athletically ducks making Mary look like an idiot, this was one of my favorite parts in the moving, showing one of her first few steps to breaking her timid tendencies. But then to goes into Mary abusing Precious verbally and attacking her with words.
Theme
The theme of push is ultimately finding hope and persevering through the hardships. Sapphire the author definently dives into this theme by reminding the reader about the sexual abuse. She conveys this as Precious brutally describes her rape experience. Lee Daniels, the director, however conveys this them by showing the viewers about Precious's multiple dreams about he rbeing famous. By bringing in the glamour aspect, it takes away the brutal and nasty things referred to in the novel. It still portrays hope, but in a different way.
