Phoenix News
Collegiate Academy at TCC Northeast
October 18, 2020
Phoenix Family,
Monday we begin the 2nd nine weeks of high school classes. Report Cards will be posted on Wednesday, October 21. Don't forget to check in with your students to see their college grades, too.
This week I would like to talk about Phoenix Success Strategy # 2 Work Hard.
Many times students don't know how to work hard when it comes to academics. They sometimes get home at night, look at their math homework and it looks entirely different than the problems they did in class that day. They have no idea how to complete their work, so they don't. Other times it looks like too much and they are overwhelmed.
Work Hard at CA means: don't give up, take ownership of your learning. If you don't know how to do your homework, use 6th period to get help from your teacher. If you have not passed TSI make a plan with your Pathways teacher or Mr. Cavanagh, then attend TSI prep 6th period or use the TSI resources available to prepare during one of your study halls. Make a plan each week of what you need to accomplish and then schedule it. Here is the good news; schedule play time too. Your brain needs a break! However, your success depends on the amount of work you put into anything! One of my favorite quotes regarding hard work is from Colin Powell; former U.S. Defense Secretary
A dream does not become reality through magic; it takes sweat, determination, and hard work.
Here are seven tips to help you work hard!
- Don't Think About it as Hard Work.
- Organize/plan your week.
- Create Small, Bite-Sized Goals. You don't have to complete everything at once
- Read Daily. Reading will help understanding. It makes you smarter! :-)
- Use your Study Hall time wisely.
- Set up a study area at home with a set time to study.
- Celebrate Wins with family and friends!
Students, put down the phone or video games or whatever is stealing your future. Get the work done, and then play!
~ Just Do It!
Always grateful,
Bobbe Knutz

Clubs!
Our CA clubs will be starting on Monday, October 19th. Your student should have signed up for a club that sounded interesting to them and their teacher sponsor should be reaching out to them about how they can get involved with the club. If you haven’t received information on clubs, reach out to your Pathways teacher so they can help you!
Seniors
Our weekly senior newsletter is still sending out great new information! If you weren’t able to see that on Friday you can click this link and see it now!
We’ll be sending out the senior newsletter every week and that will be where we’ll share senior specific information and our seniors of the week will be announced. Please make sure if you’re a senior in the class of 2021 that you fill out the google form below so that we can get this information for everyone!
https://forms.gle/3MeFeWKFijrwFS7k7
Juniors
At this point you should have had your meeting with me to plan for the spring and your final year at CA. If you are still uncertain of what your future will look like please reach out to Mr. Cavanagh and we can try to get on the same page!
Sophomores
We’ll begin our one on one meetings (digitally, whether you’re in person or online) starting the week of October 26th. I understand that you will have already registered for classes by that point so we’ll be more checking to see if there’s anything we need to change and planning your next two years after that.
For those of you that are still confused as to what to take here’s a little cheat sheet for JUST OUR SOPHOMORE CLASS:
Take a maximum of three classes
If you’ve passed your TSI Reading, take HIST-1302 with Schubert (even if you didn’t take HIST-1301 with him)
If you haven’t taken any of the following classes fill the other two spots with some combination of them:
DRAM-1310 (No TSI needed)
KINE-1304 (No TSI needed)
SPCH-1315 (No TSI needed)
SPAN-1411 (No TSI needed)
SPAN-1412 (No TSI needed, but you need to have completed SPAN-1411)
SOCI-1301 (TSI Reading Required)
KINE-1164 (If you haven’t already passed it)
Freshmen
You will have time for a meeting of your own in November where we can discuss your entire four year plan for your time at Collegiate Academy. For now, just be ready to register for your classes on Monday morning with your Pathways teachers. I’ll be meeting with all of you on either Monday or Tuesday as a class to make sure we didn’t have any problems. The schedule will look like this:
Monday:
First Period (8:35-9:20)- Mr. Valentin’s Pathways Class (In-Person)
Third Period (11:00-12:20)- Mrs. Jackson’s Pathways Class (Online)
Sixth Period (3:30-4:20)- Mrs. Fuller’s Pathways Class (In-Person, with Mrs. Aguirre)

Sixth Period (3:30-4:20)- Mr. Dye’s Pathways Class (In-Person)
TSI Testing
We’ve begun TSI Testing! If you are interested in taking a TSI test so that you can expand the number of college courses you can take, please talk to Mrs. Haney about signing up for one of our in-person times or about taking the test online.
If you test in-person there will be two morning sessions (one at 9:30 AM and one at 11:30 AM) run by Mr. Cavanagh and Mrs. Jackson and you will need to talk to Mrs. Petrasek and Mrs. Haney about your readiness to take your TSI Reading test. If they believe that you’re ready then we will get you all set to take your test on Friday on a first come first serve basis.
Town Halls
Our virtual students are likely struggling right now. Whether those struggles are academic or social/emotional the point is that many of our students are trying to do something very difficult right now and feeling pretty lonely in the process. Our Town Halls are going to try to change that!
This week’s town hall will take place from 3:30-4:30 on October 22nd and we’ll be discussing what the greatest time period to be alive would be. If you’re someone that loves history and wants to see the Pyramids being built, or someone that would rather watch them crumble in another 1000 years come and share your opinions!

Nurse
COVID-19 causes symptoms that are similar to many common illnesses, and people are infectious before they even have symptoms. So, in the case that someone in your household is displaying symptoms of illness, we ask that all of your children, as potential Close Contacts, stay home until a diagnosis is confirmed. Remember, a Close Contact is a person who is within six feet of you for 15 minutes or more, as would be common within your home.
If someone in your house is ill, then everyone has likely been exposed to the virus. Again, your campus nurse is ready to discuss with you about the specifics of your family situation and make the proper recommendations.

ATTENDANCE
Please be aware that as we move through this unique school year with in-person and remote learners, the way in which our teachers take attendance in Skyward has become much more complex. Therefore, to make better use of instructional time, teachers now have the flexibility to formally enter attendance into Skyward up to a full day after the attendance period.
With that said, it is important for parents to know that if you access Skyward to view your student’s attendance, it is possible the system may show them as being absent for the current day, even if they were present in class or online. Additionally, it is possible that remote learning students may still display as absent up until the following day.
As always, we appreciate your patience and understanding.

GCISD
USDA has issued a nationwide waiver, allowing Grapevine-Colleyville ISD to offer meals FREE at no charge through December 2020 at all elementary and middle school campuses and meal bundles at curbside locations.
Beginning on September 22, 2020 Grapevine-Colleyville ISD will begin providing free meals to students as part of the Seamless Summer Option (SSO) program. Sponsored by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA), this program will allow any student in elementary or middle school to receive a free breakfast and lunch meal in the school cafeteria, with the option to purchase a-la-carte items. Additionally, the District will offer meal bundles at no cost available for curbside pick-up that will contain meals for the entire week, including the weekend.
Curbside meals may be picked up on Wednesdays at Grapevine Elementary, Cross Timbers Middle or Grapevine Middle from 4-6 p.m. The meal bundles will include seven breakfast, seven lunches and a choice of chocolate or white ½ pint milk (14 milks will be provided). Heating instructions will be included so that families can prepare the meals at their convenience.
GCISD’s high schools do not participate in the federally funded program and therefore meals will be charged as normal in those cafeterias; however, high school students are able to pick up a meal bundle from one of the curbside locations.
For more information on how the federal program operates please visit www.squaremeals.org or www.fns.usda.gov.
Parents are encouraged to continue filling out the free and reduced application online at www.schoollunchapp.com. The benefits from being approved for free or reduced-price meals, may include discounts for transportation, standardized tests, college application fees and technology fees to name a few. If you have any questions, please email child.nutrition@gcisd.net or call 817-251-5617.
