WCJH Cross Country Qualifies for State!
The Winston Campus Junior High boys’ cross country team qualified for the State competition after placing 2nd in Sectionals this past weekend. The Winston Warriors will participate in the State competition this Saturday, October 16, in Normal, IL.
While athletes run as a team, they also “place” as individuals, and boy did they place! The boys’ team had 3 runners place in the top 10 at Sectional. Alex Kreig was named the Sectional Champion with a winning time of 11 minutes and 6 seconds for the 2 mile course. Way to go, Alex!
This is the first year District 15 has participated in the Illinois Elementary School Association (IESA), which allows an expanded opportunity for our student athletes to compete with neighboring districts and the potential to compete with other teams from around the state.
Coach Alex Soto shared, “The boys and the coaches are excited to be able to compete at the IESA State meet for the first time in school history. To be able to qualify in our first year of eligibility is incredible and I couldn't be more proud of our boys and girls who have the chance to compete. A lot of our boys have been training since last October for this moment and their hard work paid off. We hope to bring back some hardware and also hope this is the start of sending Winston kids down to state on a yearly basis on the boys and girls side. Our building has incredible kids and athletes and we are so excited to show the state what the Warriors are made of!”
Overall, District 15 had approximately sixty 7th and 8th grade students participating in the Cross Country Sectional. Even through the ongoing pandemic, we are excited to be able to bring back sports as we know the positive impact it can have on our students’ junior high experience.
The girls’ cross country team had 7 runners (with 3 alternates) also competing. This team of mostly 7th grade runners has shown true potential and we cannot wait to see how they continue to perform.
Many thanks to our coaches who support the Cross Country team. We are so lucky to have the dedicated coaching expertise of Mr. Soto, Mr. Reid, Mrs. Cheeseman, Mrs. Gronwick, and Mrs. Emilee Baldwin.
We are so proud of our District 15 students and cannot wait to hear how they perform this weekend! Good luck to the boys’ cross country team at the State competition! Go Warriors!
