Elementary Grading Information for Parents
For the first time in nearly three decades, the SMSD has updated the descriptors used in elementary English Language Arts and Mathematics report cards. The skills reflect high impact skills that students must have mastered for future academic success. For that reason, you may notice some differences in the information on the report card.
Here is some important information for you as parents to understand:
● While descriptors have changed, the grading process and expectations have not changed.
● This is not standards-based grading. Instead, it is an attempt to better align reporting with what students are actually learning.
● There will be a larger discussion about evaluating student progress in the coming year, which will include feedback from parents about what grading information you would find helpful.
● For students with support plans (IEP, 504, ELL, or other) the student must receive supports as noted in their individual plans. When accommodations/modifications are implemented, scores will reflect students' individual performance with those supports.
Summary of Elementary Subject-Area Grades (This has not changed.)
S, I, N, U are available in grades K-3 across all subjects. In grades 4-6, S, I, N, U are used in the specials' subjects such as Art, Music, and PE.

Digital Learning Resources: Instructions for Student Accounts
Canvas is our district Learning Management System, which lets teachers communicate with students, assign work, and grade work. As parents, you have the ability to see what is in their student’s Canvas account, providing a day-to-day look at what your student is doing in their courses. An observer account provides access to see assignments, teacher feedback, and view student learning progress.
- Create Canvas Observer Account - This is the parent account for Canvas
- Pair Observer Account with Student Pairing Code - This will enable you to connect your account with your student’s account and observe their learning experience through Canvas.
- Organize Canvas Dashboard (Video) - For those that have several students in the district, this information will help to organize the student information
- Color code Canvas course cards by student or school
- Rename Canvas course cards with student names
- Personalize the dashboard with only the courses you want to follow
- Turn off notifications for courses you do not need or want updates for
- Using the Canvas App - This will allow access by phone to the information in Canvas accounts.
- Parent Canvas Guides
Skyward is our Student Information System. This account allows you access to all final grade reporting, student data, registration and enrollment, and district required forms. This also is a resource many schools use for scheduling conferences
National Digital Citizenship Week
The SMSD will host a session with Lindsay Stephenson, coordinator of instructional technology, to help families learn more about Digital Citizenship in our classrooms.
9 a.m.
Thursday, Oct. 21, 2021 at 9:00 AM
Find the link to register for the event.
Digital Citizenship Week begins the week of October 18! Students and staff across the district will spend time that week and in the following weeks focusing on Digital Citizenship in our classrooms.
During the October 21 session, find answers to questions such as:
- What is Digital Citizenship?
- How can I support my student becoming a better Digital Citizen?
- What are some discussions that I can start having with my child about digital citizenship?
- What are resources that can help me learn more?
Thank you for your support of our digital learning program.
Sincerely,
Lindsay Stephenson
Coordinator of Instructional Technology
Sidewalk Chalk Day Oct. 21
Orange & Black Spirit Day October 29
K-6 students may wear orange and black or costumes to school on Friday, October 29. If students plan to wear costumes, please be aware they could potentially get damaged due to students participating in recess, lunch and PE throughout the day.
Kindergarten and first grade students will have an outdoor Halloween Parade in the circle drive beginning at 8:30am. Parents of kindergarten and 1st grade students are welcome to attend. Please line up along the circle drive sidewalk to allow for our students to walk by during the parade.
Please read through the following guidelines below.
1. Costumes should allow access for students to use the bathroom and costumes should not require teacher assistance. Students will still be participating in recess.
2. Absolutely no accessories. Costumes that require carrying any extra and/or unsafe items such as skateboards, surfboards, swords, guns, spears, etc.… are not acceptable.
3. No pacifiers, false teeth or anything placed in the mouth.
4. Costumes should not reflect graphic violence or extreme blood and gore.
5. No full-face mask or pullover masks or hoods.
6. No excessive facial make-up. Make-up should not be brought to school, including tubes of cream, hair color spray, fake blood, etc.…
7. Hats and wigs are permitted.
8. Footwear must be safe and supportive. Students who have PE class must wear or bring sneakers.
