A Word From Mrs. Loor
Dear Franklin Families,
It was a relatively quiet first week of the year at school. We transitioned back into catching up with friends and beginning to learn increasingly complex curriculum through deeper engagement. We have many exciting and fun events happening throughout this month.
The PTO has once again sponsored an artist in residence who will be working with our art teachers, Mrs. Breznak and Ms. Terkovich, to create a mural in our school. Every student will have the opportunity to paint a portion of the mural. Please see the flyer below for more information.
In addition, our second graders are working on a service project and Battle of the Books is back with Mrs. Mills. Details are provided below. Our 4th graders will be having their winter concert on Thursday, January 19th at 2 pm. A livestream link will be provided next week to 4th grade parents who wish or need to join us virtually.
Lastly, we have a winner for our school rules poster contest! Congratulations to Ryan Pandit in 4S for his very cool design! Posters will be hung throughout the school to remind us to take of our ourselves, to take care of each other and to take care of this place.
Have a fantastic week!
With Warmest Regards,
Mrs. Loor

Happy New Year to our Franklin families! I hope you had a wonderful winter break!
As we enter the new year, we are kicking off our Battle of the Books program. Battle is a long-standing Summit District reading incentive program that encourages reading across a broad spectrum of books while incorporating teamwork and fun! Being a part of a Battle team is a commitment through April when the leading Franklin 4th grade team and 5th grade team compete against the leading teams from the other elementary schools. In the days before winter break, we introduced Battle of the Books to our 4th and 5th grade students, many of whom were familiar and quite excited to participate. We put preliminary teams together and looked at the books for each grade level, so that some students could get started on their reading. Interested students will join a Google classroom and parents will need to complete an electronic participation permission form.
If your student is new to Battle of the Books, please take a look at the attached slideshow that was created by Ms. Cindy Abramov from Washington Elementary School. We will be finalizing our teams this week and begin our Battle preparation in earnest this month. If you have any questions, please reach out to me at jmills@summit.k12.nj.us

From the Nurse's Office
BABY IT'S COLD OUTSIDE!
Winter weather and freezing temperatures have arrived! It is important that students dress appropriately for the cold temperatures by wearing long pants, jackets, hats and gloves to school to ensure their health and safety while outside at morning line-up and recess. Risks associated with underdressing in the cold are hypothermia and frostbite, both of which can lower an individual’s immune system, making them more susceptible to viruses.
In addition, hypothermia occurs more quickly in children, and many children are not as in tune with their bodies and the symptoms of hypothermia as adults. This is due to the fact that children do not develop the full capacity to feel cold until at least 7 years old.
Fly high Falcons, but before you do, remember to put on your coat, hat and gloves!
For health-related questions or concerns, please contact Mrs. Zanelli, our school nurse. Her email is azanelli@summit.k12.nj.us. You can also visit the Summit Public Schools Virtual Health Office for additional information.
