Hermann Elementary Bearcat Bulletin
Learn. Lead. Grow. Succeed. Together!
November 1, 2019
How is it already November 1st? I can't believe how quickly the month of October passed us by! I have a feeling that Thanksgiving will be here quicker than we anticipate! Thank you for a fantastic first quarter!
THANK YOU FAMILIES
We'd like to thank our special guests who attended "Lunch with Loved Ones" and "Donuts with Dudes" in October. Our next special family events will be a Title One Reading Night in November and "Mornings with Ma'ams" for first-grade students in December.
PTO trash bag sales went very well! These sales generated around $2500 profit for our students. Thank you to our PTO for all of your hard work associated with these sales. Please pick up your trash bag orders if you haven't already done so!
Thank you, students, for your high levels of participation in Red Ribbon Week! It was a huge success! We appreciate your support and willingness to promote a healthy, drug-free lifestyle.
PTO News
PTO is excited to offer the PTO Keepsake (Magnet) Art Fundraiser again this year. The students and Ms. Ditch have worked hard in art class to provide you some original artwork for this annual fundraiser with proceeds that go to benefit our students' field trips and end of the year "Fun Day." Please continue to check your folder for the order forms, and return forms by the date listed. This will help ensure delivery by the holidays.
Other Important Info.
School will not be in session on Monday, November 4 for staff professional development.
Don't forget to "fall back" with your clocks this weekend. It's always nice to gain an extra hour, but nights get long when it's dark at 5:00PM!
School will not be in session on Wednesday, November 27 through Friday, November 29 for the Thanksgiving holiday. Classes resume on Monday, December 2. Happy Thanksgiving!
Any unclaimed lost and found items will be donated by November 15. We have quite a collection of sweatshirts and heavy jackets on our stage. Please encourage your child to look there if he/she has something missing!
Please continue to send lunch money on Mondays. Sending money on Mondays may prevent a school messenger call later in the week!
If your child is absent from school, please call our school office by 9:30. This, too, may prevent a school messenger call! :)
We have received many calls to change student transportation very late in our school day. Our student handbook states that all calls to change transportation must be made before 12:00. It is very difficult to get change notices to teachers after 12:00 PM. We would appreciate your full cooperation on this matter.
When dropping off your child in the morning if you choose to park and walk him/her to the door, please remember to walk to your child's side of the car and escort him/her to the crosswalk in the front of the building entrance. I have noticed some of the kiddos hopping out of their car before a parent can make it out to help. We want to make sure that all our students are able to enter the building safely. Thank you!
Please note that our third graders will perform in our Winter Concert on Wednesday, December 11 at the Hermann High School auditorium. They will perform along with the fourth grade students from HMS. More information will come in our next Bearcat Bulletin.
A Note from Title One
Reading comprehension is the ability to read, understand, process, and recall what was just read. Comprehension is a critical component of reading instruction. But how can you make sure your child truly understands what they are reading? They may be able to read all of the words out loud but they may struggle with actually understanding what is happening in the book or story. In order for children to develop true reading comprehension skills, they need to practice these skills over and over again with support. Comprehension also helps them better enjoy reading! Below, you will find a list of questions you can ask your students before, during, and after reading to help them better comprehend the books they are reading at home. Remember, the best way to become a better reader is to read!
Questions to ask before you read:
Can you look at the pictures and predict what will happen in this book?
What makes you think that?
Do you think there will be a problem in this story? Why or why not?
Does the topic/story relate to you or your family? How?
What are you curious to find out in this book?
What do you want to learn?
Questions to ask while you read:
What do you think will happen next?
What is the problem in the book?
Why do you think the character did that?
When you were reading that part, what were you picturing in your head?
What can you tell me about the story so far?
What would you have done if you were the character?
As you read, what are you wondering about?
Can you put what you’ve read in your own words?
Questions to ask after you’ve read:
In your opinion, was the title for this book a good title? Why or why not?
Were you predictions correct?
Why do you think the author wrote this book?
What is the most important point the author is trying to make in his writing?
What was your favorite part in this story?
Can you retell the story in order?
If you were _______, how would you have felt?
Did you like this book? Why or why not?
Feel free to contact the Title 1 teachers anytime for more ideas to help your reader with comprehension!
