Monday Memo

From the Principal...
I apologize for the "late" arrival of you Monday Memo. We've just returned from the ConnectED Leadership and Learning Academy in Dallas. It was an incredible honor to be among 47 of the other 114 ConnectED schools. Learning about the journey, both successes and challenges, was great experience. The Academy had a teacher's track and a principal's track. Teachers focused on instructional strategies and teacher leadership. Principals focused on 5 best practices and next steps in planning for next year. In this Monday Memo, I'm including some information about a few of the topics addressed this weekend, In particular, the Classroom APP and the introduction to Challenge-Based Learning. I have also included a few take-ways from Natalie Kimbrell and Kinsey Tupper.

Apple Classroom APP
Description
Classroom turns your iPad into a powerful teaching assistant, helping a teacher guide students through a lesson, see their progress, and keep them on track. With Classroom, you can easily launch the same app on every student device at the same time or launch a different app for each group of students. Classroom helps teachers focus on teaching so students can focus on learning.
Assign Shared iPads to students
- Once configured, Classroom connects to nearby student devices
- Classroom intelligently assigns students to the Shared iPad they most recently used
- Log students out of Shared iPad at the end of a session to prepare for the next class
Start, focus, or pause student work
- Launch any app, website, or book on student devices with a tap
- Lock devices into a single app to help students focus
- Lock screens to pause work or refocus your class
See what your students see with Screen View
- See an overview of all student screens at once
- Focus on a single student screen
- Students are informed when their screens are being viewed
Share student work on the classroom Apple TV
- Showcase the great work your students are doing to the class
- Use AirPlay to wirelessly present a student’s screen
- Students are informed when their screens are being presented
Reset forgotten passwords right in the classroom
- Reset a Managed Apple ID password without calling IT
Organize student devices using groups
- Classroom automatically creates groups of students based on the apps they are using
- Teachers can create groups to break students into project teams
- Perform actions on entire groups or on individual students within groups
Great for use with both 1:1 and Shared iPad student devices
All actions take place over the local network only.

ConnectED Academy Teacher Take-Aways
The biggest thing that I took away from the ConnectED conference this past weekend is the incredible amount of support that is behind our use of this technology. The number of professional, extremely knowledgeable people that are behind us is astounding. They are a wealth of knowledge. I was also very relieved to discover that other schools have experienced the same challenges that we have experienced. I guess the overlying theme of what I took away is that we are not alone. I am SO excited to share everything that I have learned with all of you. I hope that I am able to help you with achieving things within your classroom that you never thought were possible!
Kinsey Tupper-4th Grade Teacher
I think the most important thing for me, that I took away from this academy was the strategy of using Challenge-Based Learning. This will help me reach not only the next level in LOTI but all levels.
Natalie Kimbrell-5th Grade Teacher
