Letter from Principal Nelson
Residents of Smallville USA-
If you are new to having a student in secondary school, let us know what burning questions or concerns you currently have, and we’ll do our best to respond in kind. It’s a vastly different world than elementary school, and it seems that the kids acclimate quicker than we do. Also, as you may have noticed by now, these little fountains of information seem to emit less and less as they age. As parents and guardians, we go from “when will they stop with all the questions,’ to “why won’t they tell me what’s going on” almost overnight. This is a natural progression in adolescence which is why we’ll do our best to answer the questions they won’t. Simply send me an email and I can either answer or direct you to the person who best can.
Speaking of students, if you are like me, you love spending time with your kids and only wish you could see more of them. The eight hours away from them each day seems like an eternity, and you wish there was some way you could be more involved in this most special time of their lives. Lucky for you, your Smallville family has you covered; volunteering. That’s right, the absolute best way to check in on and share in your students’ joyful day is by volunteering here on campus, specifically during lunches. We need more volunteers to assist in monitoring during lunch periods and cannot think of a better way to maim two birds with one stone. All we need is some extra eyes out back in the courtyard to monitor our students to ensure safety and sanitation. If you are interested in getting back at least part of the 8 hours with your student we are taking from you each day, send me an email, and we’ll put you on the schedule.
Crosswalks: We are trying our darndest to make sure kids know to only cross on Monterey Oaks at the crosswalk, but we need your support as well. If you are dropping them off Northbound on Monterey Oaks, make sure they know to take the sidewalk to the crosswalk and cross there. Sure, it’s a long walk, and we currently are without a crossing guard, but it is much safer. Cars always look for pedestrians in these areas, not darting in and out of the street. Likewise, when dropping off in the front of the school, only let your student out of your vehicle once you have crossed the crosswalk, not before. We see way too many students get out of their cars early and try to walk across the parking lot exit where they can’t be seen by outgoing traffic and busses. Oh, and please pull all the way forward and try not to leave any space between you and the car in front of you. Mind the gaps!
Speaking (writing) of crosswalks, we need a crossing guard in the worst possible way. Unfortunately, this is not someone that AISD or Small hires, so we are at the mercy of the City of Austin. They know we are short, but there aren’t many available persons to take the post and help our students cross safely before and after school. If you know somebody interested in applying, please see the attached information. Also, if you are inclined to share your concerns with the Powers that Be, please do so (COA). We’re hoping more attention to this hazard will place somebody at the post sooner rather than later.
I hope you had a great weekend with your student and make sure to check in with them about their week and how their first C-day went.

Got an appointment?
Method #1) Send your student in with a note. First thing in the morning, they should come to the main office with a note from home stating what time they will be picked up. We will exchange that note for a pass to leave class at that time. When the time comes, the student shows their teacher the pass and then comes to the main office. They are there ready for pick up and you make your appointment on time.
Method #2) What I like to call... Order a kid. let's say you just found out about an appointment, or forgot to send a note... No problem - just go to the main page of our website www.smallmiddleschool.org and scroll to the bottom. Under the helpful links section, click "Student Early Pickup Request". Our front office staff will monitor that all day and send a note to the student to come down at the time requested.
If method one or two are not used, prepare to wait up to 30 minutes for us to find your student and get them to the office.
