First Chapter Friday
Our last First Chapter Friday in April is a National Book Award winner; author Elizabeth Acevedo writes about the devastation of loss, the difficulty of forgiveness, and the bittersweet bonds that shape our lives in this verse novel. Camino Rios lives for the summers when her father visits her in the Dominican Republic. But this time, on the day when his plane is supposed to land, Camino arrives at the airport to see crowds of crying people…
In New York City, Yahaira Rios is called to the principal’s office, where her mother is waiting to tell her that her father, her hero, has died in a plane crash.
Separated by distance—and secrets—the two girls are forced to face a new reality in which their father is dead and their lives are forever altered.
F.R. Haythorne Track and Field Day - Permission Form
Hello F.R. Haythorne families.
Our school track meet is on May 18th, which is fast approaching, and F.R. Haythorne is one of two schools in EIPS piloting a new digital field trip form. In the coming days, parents and guardians identified as the first parent contact in PowerSchool will receive an email from a company called PermissionCLICK. This email will contain a unique link that will take you to a permission form to fill out for each student. If you have more than one student here at F.R. Haythorne, you will receive multiple emails. Each student is required to have a submitted field trip form to participate in the track and field meet. We hope that this new system will simplify this process for both families and our staff.
As this is a new service provider and process, there will be challenges along the way. Please let us know if you encounter any issues, and we will work with you and PermissionCLICK to rectify them. If you have any feedback on the process or ideas on how it might work better, please share those as well.
If you have any questions or concerns, please let us know.

Cyber Friday - Gaming
Gaming is one of the most popular activities for teens around the world. This environment is often foreign to adults. Here are a few things to think about if your child is gaming: Check the age ratings for games that youth are playing to ensure that they are age appropriate. These can be found on the physical copy of the game, by searching online, or through app stores. Whether it's violence or sexually explicit material, the content can influence their thoughts and behaviours. It can also be helpful to read reviews before deciding to purchase specific games. CommonSenseMedia.com has age ratings, reviews, and spots for parents to share their thoughts. It is also essential to talk about privacy settings with your youth. These settings control who can contact them, and it's best if only friends can do so. Computer games will have different settings within each game and distribution service (Steam, Blizzard). Be sure to turn off the location settings of any gaming consoles (xBox, PS4) and set parental controls for them, so you can change settings and view the history. It is also a trend to livestream yourself playing games on Twitch. Talk to your youth about the dangers of livestreaming - unintentionally sharing personal information, getting contacted by strangers, etc.
This is Empathy: Mental Health Week runs May 2-8
Mental Health Week takes place May 2-8. To mark the week, Sherwood Heights has a series of activities and lessons planned for students, all centered on Mental Health Week’s theme, “This is Empathy”—particularly fitting, especially this year. Empathy helps connect us, feel less isolated, and shows us how we can help others.
Collectively, students will learn when we do something good for others, we lift both their spirits and our own. In addition to school activities, students and staff can also share messages about empathy and kindness on various social media platforms using the hashtag #GetReal.

Virtual Family Gatherings
Many thanks to the families who joined us for our virtual gatherings this winter. It was a pleasure to reconnect with those who were part of the gatherings last year and to welcome new families to our virtual circle. We’re grateful for the conversation, the ideas shared and the feedback on work that’s happening throughout the Division. We look forward to seeing you all again next school year—hopefully in person at some point!
If there’s anything stemming from the gatherings you wish to discuss, please reach out to the lead teacher at your child’s school or someone from the First Nations, Métis and Inuit Education team directly:
Planning for the 2022- 23 School Year
March and April are busy times for school lead teachers and the First Nations, Métis and Inuit Education team as planning begins for the next school year. Lead teachers and the team reflect on the successes and challenges of the past year, and the hopes for 2022-23. If you have ideas or feedback for your child’s school or the Division in general, please reach out to the lead teacher or connect with the First Nations, Métis and Inuit Education team.
Treaty 6 and Métis Nation Flag Raising | June 13
If you’ve driven by EIPS Central Services recently, you may have noticed the addition of two new flag poles. As a further commitment on the path of truth-telling toward reconciliation, and as an affirmation as Treaty partners, EIPS will be raising the Treaty 6 and Métis Nation flag on June 13. Each school in the Division will also display the two flags and are busy planning staff professional development and student learning experiences to understand the significance of each flag. More information on the Central Services ceremony and the specific events at each school will be shared in the near future.
Opening of Central Services Land-based Learning Space | June 21
EIPS has been working closely with Elder Wilson Bearhead to design and build a land-based learning space at EIPS Central Services. With spring on its way, construction will resume on the space. As part of Indigenous Peoples’ Day on June 21, EIPS will officially open the space, honour our ongoing relationship with Elder Wilson and affirm our commitment to deepen our relationship with the land that sustains us. We’ll share details of the opening event as the date draws closer.
First Nations, Métis, and Inuit learning corner
As our country moves toward reconciliation with Indigenous peoples, we thought we’d bring you a simple, easy way to move your own understanding forward if you’re curious about how you can be a part of the learning which leads to reconciliation. #Next150 was first introduced a couple of years ago, and we felt it was a good time to re-introduce it to the FR Haythorne community. Each link will take you to a short activity you can do to move your learning forward. This week as the weather warms up & many of us are spending more time outdoors & in our gardens this challenge is perfect! We know that Indigenous communities have always had strong connections to the land & are committed to protecting it in multiple ways. But do you know which species of plants are considered invasive in outdoor spaces (be it your own or someplace else)? If a plant was introduced & thrives, that’s one thing, but if it has taken over, potentially damaging the ecosystem, it should be removed. This link will take you to a more complete explanation as well as some excellent links to determine what is invasive & what is not. We encourage you to enjoy the outdoors & find a way to honor the land we share with this knowledge. https://next150.indianhorse.ca/challenges/decolonized-landscapes
The Future of Masculinity Summit
The Future of Masculinity Summit 2.0 is the second annual summit hosted by Next Gen Men and community partnership organizations. In this full-day virtual conference hosted on Discord, we’ll delve into where boys fit within the #MeToo social movement. Participants will explore why gender equality matters to them, what they’ve been told about how they should act within social justice movements, what they actually believe and how they can use these powerful insights to create change.

The world can be a very polarizing place these days—it can be very difficult to know where we fit within varying, strongly-felt opinions. We’re told if we don’t believe in x, that makes us y, and if we act any differently than how we’re supposed to, we may be subject to scrutiny. While all this is happening, society has forgotten about our boys—those who want to do the right thing but are afraid of being reprimanded, who feel dismissed and invalidated because of all the rigid narratives they hear.
Participants in this summit will experience a safe space to explore those narratives, the feelings associated with them, how they can find their own voice to speak their truth and what they can do to become change-makers in their own lives, relationships, and communities.
