CHELTENHAM RECOGNIZES MERIT STUDENTS
Cheltenham School District and Cheltenham High School congratulate the two seniors who were recently announced as semi-finalists for the National Merit Scholarship program, as well as the seven students who were commended by the organization.
According to the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, over 1.6 million high school juniors in more than 22,000 schools across the country entered the 2018 program by taking the 2016 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, which serves as an initial screening of program applicants.
The semi-finalists represent less than one percent of the nation’s high school graduating seniors. In Pennsylvania, only 728 students were named semi-finalists and 1,226 were commended. The two Cheltenham semi-finalists will now compete to become National Merit Finalists, at which time they would become eligible for scholarships through the National Merit Scholarship Corporation or its sponsoring organizations. Finalists will be announced in the spring of 2018.
The two Cheltenham seniors named semi-finalists are Lila Harmar and Jessica Knapp, while the seven commended students are Sophie Cohen, Ariel Feinberg, Paige Goldberg, Jackson Healy, Lowell Hoyt, Vivek Olumbe, and Mary Grace Rittler.
“It’s a huge feather in their cap with regard to their college applications,” said Lori Cohen, Cheltenham High School Counselor/Coordinator. “Some colleges give full scholarships to finalists.”

WYNCOTE ELEMENTARY PRINCIPAL CONTESTANT ON PRICE IS RIGHT LIVE!
Dr. Crystal Clark, principal at Wyncote Elementary, was recently a contestant on Price is Right LIVE at the Keswick Theatre, which she attended with her mom. We thought we’d let her describe her experience in her own words, as we don’t think we could adequately capture her excitement and enthusiasm through a second person re-telling!
My mother's favorite game show has always been the Price Is Right. So, when I saw the Price Is Right LIVE show advertised as coming to the Keswick Theatre, I knew I had to take her. The timing was particularly sweet because my mother had just celebrated a birthday and this would definitely be a treat that she wasn't expecting.
On the evening of Thursday, October 12th, we put on our custom-made t-shirts and headed to the show.
Our seats were way in the back of the theatre but that didn't matter to us. The announcer came out to hype up the crowd, the host was introduced, and then I heard…CRYSTAL CLARK Come On Down!!! I couldn't believe it. I was the first contestant called. At first, I jumped up and down in the aisle, but with a push from people around me, I found myself running and screaming down the aisle, slapping audience member hands along the way.
At contestant’s row, I stood with a group of three other lucky players. We bid on the first item, an electric guitar. To my surprise, my bid was closest to the actual retail price and I was ushered on stage.
While the host talked to me, several people from the Cheltenham Community were cheering me on. My mother was standing up and yelling from the back of the theatre. The host then invited my mother to join me on the stage. I played a game called PUNCH A BUNCH. I was introduced to four items, and had to guess if the retail price displayed was higher or lower. I guessed all four correctly, which gave me four punches to find the ultimate prize of $5000. My mother and I took turns punching and even though we were close, we didn't win the big money.
I left the stage with $100 and a night of memories that will last for a lifetime.
GLENSIDE ELEMENTARY TO CELEBRATE UNITY DAY
On October 24th, Glenside Elementary School will be celebrating Unity Day. This is a national event that aims to educate, inspire, and involve students in the prevention of bullying, both at home and in school.
All Glenside students are invited to wear orange in honor of this event. It could be a t-shirt, socks, shoelaces, sweater, etc. Why orange? Orange has been declared the official color for bullying prevention awareness.
We will also be conducting special activities in recognition of Unity Day and bullying prevention.
1. Mix It Up @ Lunch
On Unity Day, student will be “mixing it up” in the cafeteria during their lunch period. This event gives students the chance to cross social boundaries and interact with students they wouldn’t normally have the opportunity to speak with.
2. Classroom Discussions
Mr. D. will be talking about this important topic with all of our classrooms.
3. Human Peace Symbol
Students will create a human peace symbol in the school yard.GLENSIDE ELEMENTARY RECOGNIZES BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH

A Maker Space is a place in which people with shared interests, especially in computing, technology, building and problem solving can gather to work on projects while sharing ideas, equipment, and knowledge. On October 26, 2017, Wyncote Elementary will host Maker Dad’s Day. A mobile lab will set up a variety of maker space activities on the grounds of Wyncote Elementary. Classes will be scheduled to rotate through the labs at set times during the day. WE NEED DADS TO SIGN UP TO HELP US BUILD. All skill levels are welcome.
More About Wyncote’s iLAB
Wyncote Elementary is developing an iLAB for innovation and creation. This is a brand new space that will be created based on students' and teachers' needs and visions. It will be a place to extend the learning in the classroom using PBL, STEAM, and Design Thinking.
We are building this from the ground up. It will grow as the students create and learn more about design thinking and STEAM. As our kick-off event, we have recruited the expertise of Dr. Joe Mazza of Makerdads. He has created a tailgate style event with 25 labs that incorporate the ideas of empathy, innovation and empowerment while using STEAM concepts. These are hands-on and interactive activities that require the men and the children to work together while utilizing their problem-solving skills.
Dr. Mazza is an expert in the field of family engagement and has been involved in many programs that are geared toward bringing the community together to support student achievement. He is scheduled to host this event all over the country in the coming months. We were extremely lucky to be able to bring him here to host in his own backyard just as this adventure takes off and soars. Don't miss out!

COUNT DOWN FOR LAUNCHING OF WE iLab!
Wyncote is almost ready to launch WE iLab. This new innovation lab is being created with the students vision and help. We are using the makerspace model to start the process. This week and next, students are being introduced to what a makerspace is and why we want to create one in our school. One female student ran up to Dr. Clark after learning about this and exclaimed, "I CANT WAIT TO GET IN THERE AND CREATE! I am so excited to learn new things. I am going home to research more!"
Makerspaces provide hands-on, creative ways to encourage students to design, experiment, build and invent as they deeply engage in science, technology, engineering, math and tinkering. This new space is connected to the CSD Strategic Plan in many ways. It needs community and family engagement, encourages the project-based learning philosophy and develops 21st century skills for all of our learners.
We will kick-off the iLab with our Makerdads event of October 26, 2017. Please support our tech drive! See attached flyer for more info!
