BCE Bear Mail
Friday October 6th.
Message from the office.
Hello BCE Community-
We had an amazing Walk/ Jog today. Everyone had such a fantastic time. Each student will get the laps from their teacher next week if they don't already have them. Thank you to the parent club for all the organization and support. It is such a fun event.
We tried to keep the kids cool today. So if they are coming home a bit wet, so sorry :)
We don' have school next Friday, 10/13/23. Please enjoy a 3-day weekend.
Have a great weekend.
I can be reached best by email at gfippin@slvusd.org

Book Fair
Get ready! The Scholastic Book Fair is coming our way (YAY!). Choosing their own books
empowers kids and inspires them to become lifelong readers. And—as
always—every purchase at the Fair benefits our school. All the funds from the event go directly
to our wonderful library. Also, every student is going home with a book during the classroom
preview!
Here’s what you need to know about the big event which will take place:
October 16-20, 2023. Monday to Thursday: 8 am-3:30 pm, Friday: 8 am-2 pm
at BCE Library
Visit our Book Fair homepage to learn more and get started with eWallet and online shopping:

We see a lot of student interest in our Fair every year, and the parent’s club needs more
volunteers to help keep things running smoothly. Please consider signing up for a shift here:

Triple P Parenting Workshops
Triple P/First, Five of Santa Cruz County, offers ongoing parenting classes for parents of students of all ages. Please click here to see their workshop offerings.
Triple P also offers 1:1 sessions for parents who need intensive 10-week sessions and add-on sessions for people who are divorcing or separating (Family Transitions), for couples wanting to work on their relationship (Enhanced), and for people wanting to work on their strong emotions, like anger (Pathways). If interested in 1:1 sessions, please get in touch with First 5 of Santa Cruz: https://www.first5scc.org/contact
Santa Cruz COE Family Engagement Survey
The coordinator for family engagement services at the Santa Cruz County Office of Education has created a family survey addressing family engagement. It is county-wide, so parents can select the grade level and district. This will provide general, high-level data about what are the biggest obstacles to being more involved, preferred methods of communication, what's working, what could be different, areas where parents would like more support/training etc. If you are interested in completing the survey, please click the links attached.

Attendance Matters
We know people get sick, people get injured, and there can be family or life responsibilities and other issues that are reasonable and excused.
But if your student can attend, they need to be in school.
If your student is out for three or more consecutive days, we may request a doctor's note to continue excusing the absences.
Students who miss 3-5 days will receive a Chronic Absence letter. We will then meet with those families to attempt to support the student attending school. On the second Chronic Absence Letter, families may be required to meet at the District Office to put a plan in place for the student's attendance. On the third Chronic Absence Letter, families may be required to meet with the County Office Student Attendance Review Board for truancy.
Our goal is that nobody ever gets that far along with truancy. We are here to help and support, but it does start at home with the expectation that your student will attend school regularly.
PBIS Planitum Award
I am excited to announce the BCE has been awarded the Planitum PBIS Award this year. The state of California awards schools implementing Positive Behavior Support at different levels based on the implementation. BCE has been awarded the highest level possible this year. We are excited to educate the WHOLE CHILD, focusing on academics, social-emotional learning, and positive reinforcement. To learn more about the state recognition system, click here.

Volunteers
We are excited to have volunteers back on campus. All volunteers need to be cleared with the appropriate paperwork from the office. The office is happy to help if you have questions about your volunteer status.
If you can volunteer this year, we would love to have you. Please speak with your teacher and office staff. All volunteer schedules need to be approved by classroom teachers before volunteers begin in classrooms.
