Principal's Message
ELK Family,
Congratulations to our BHS Student Body for winning the Verizon and WFAA "Best School Spirit Award" last week. Thanks to our Cheerleaders, Strutters, and Band for contributing to our "Spirit" each and every week. We were fortunate to have visitors/representatives from Verizon and WFAA on Friday for the pep rally. They were amazed at how well our students represented BHS. I heard them say many times, "It is not like this at every school." Well, I definitely agree and, as the principal, it always make me proud to be a part of the great things we have here at BHS. We truly have something special in ELK NATION!!!
Join us for "Meet the Teacher Night" - Monday, September 18 - 6:00 - 7:30 pm. Bring your child or a copy of his/her schedule so you'll know which classes to visit. Also, the Elk Library will be hosting a Scholastic Book Fair so be sure to stop by while you are there! We hope to see you tomorrow evening!
Go ELKS!!

PSAT Information for 9th, 10th, and 11th Graders
All BHS students in grade 9 will take the PSAT 8/9 and all students in grades 10 and 11 will take the PSAT/NMSQT on Wednesday, October 11th, 2017. (No registration or payment required for BHS students.)
Taking an SAT practice test is good practice for the PSAT/NMSQT and PSAT 10 because the assessments measure the same skills and knowledge in ways that make sense for different grade levels. Get started today by visiting www.khanacademy.org.
Students can also download the SAT Daily Practice App in the App Store.
Kaplan is offering a NEW and FREE test prep opportunity for PSAT https://www.kaptest.com/psat/pages/psat-prep-live

Questions on which parent should complete your child’s FASFA?
FAFSA (free application for federal student aid) opens on October 1, 2017. Obtain your FSA at fsaid.ed.gov first and then visit fafsa.ed.gov to start a new FAFSA.
TSI (Texas Success Initiative)
The TSI Assessment is a program designed to help colleges determine if students are ready for college-level course work in the general areas of reading, writing and mathematics. When you are an incoming college student in Texas, you will be required to take the TSI Assessment — unless you are exempt (read below) — to determine your readiness for college-level work. Based on how you perform, you may either be enrolled in a college-level course that matches your skill level or be placed in the appropriate developmental course or intervention to improve your skills and prepare you for success in college level courses.
Exemptions
Have met the minimum college readiness standard on SAT®, or ACT.
Have successfully completed college-level English and math courses
We encourage students to check with their college of choice to determine if they need to take the TSI.
The first TSI administration will be on Thursday, November 3rd. We encourage students who are not exempt to take the TSI while still in high school. Students who know they are attending a 2-year college are also encouraged to take the TSI if not exempt. Registration will begin in October.

Senior Ad Deadline Change
SENIORS AND SENIOR PARENTS
We have been having an issue with the yearbook’s email. The issue has been resolved. However, in order to provide proper customer service to our valued parents we are EXTENDING THE SENIOR AD DEADLINE to, Tuesday, October 2nd.
It is my hope that this will alleviate some of the stress of pulling information for ads together. Updated order forms are attached to this email.
Thank you for your continued support of The Elk Yearbook and the 2018 Senior Class.

Do you want to win a CAR?
Students, how would you like to drive a new Nissan Sentra? You could be the lucky winner of a new car if you participate in the Burleson High School, STRIVE-TO-DRIVE program. Here’s how:
- Students must be enrolled in the Burleson ISD for the entire 6 week grading period.
- Students may earn 1 ticket per 6 weeks for perfect attendance.
- Students may earn 4 BONUS tickets per semester for perfect attendance (Fall & Spring).
- Students may earn 10 BONUS tickets for the year for perfect attendance.
- Students may earn a maximum of 24 tickets per school year.
A Nissan Sentra will be awarded in May, at halftime, of the BHS Powder Puff football game.
**The district will utilize state guidelines for reporting average daily attendance to determine perfect attendance contest eligibility.**
**Students will not be notified about the number of tickets they have been awarded. If a student has questions, he/she should go to their House Office.**
