What's Happening in 5th Grade?
Math
We are finishing up our adding and subtracting mixed numbers unit and will be testing Thursday, March 12. Students have been working really hard on this topic so I can't to see how they will do on the post-assessment! Next we will be learning how to multiply mixed numbers and fractions!
ELA
In reading, we are have completed our unit on text structures. Tests have been passed back to your child. If you would like to know their score you can check with your student or have them bring their data binder home.
Our next unit will be on making inferences. We will cover both non-fiction and fiction texts.
In writing, we are finishing up our persuasive writing pieces. We will be having a publishing party next week for students to share their finished work with their peers. This will be sent home for them to share with you as well!
You can visit arbookfind.com for any book information or suggestions for books that are on your child's reading level.
AR Goals
Science and Social Studies
Science
The final test and pretest over Earth’s Water Systems was handed back to students on Team Orange on Monday. We also began our unit on The Solar System as we began to explore ways in which we can describe the Earth’s location in terms of the universe, our Milky Way Galaxy, and our solar system. We also began to explore characteristics of stars such as our sun and what sets stars about from other objects in space. We learned that stars a mass of burning gases that can be different in terms of temperature, age, size, color, and brightness. We also learned that the brightness of stars can be affected by distance and the amount of energy a star has.
Next week, we will explore the Sun as the star of our solar system and how the planets and other objects within our solar system orbit the sun. We will discuss that the sun is made up of different layers of gas and energy and will discuss how solar flares of the sun’s energy can affect Earth. We will soon begin to learn more about the positions and characteristics of the inner and outer planets of the solar system as well.
We will also continue to review in next few weeks some of the concepts from our previous units on the Earth’s Systems and Earth’s Water as we discuss ways in which we can conserve and protect Earth and its natural resources.
Social Studies
We tested today over the last concepts of the American Revolution and will soon begin to explore how the new nation of the United States was formed following the revolution. During this unit of study, we will learn how early leaders within the new United States government began to construct the Constitution and Bill of Rights to provide rights for the citizens of the new nation. We will also begin to learn about how the early leaders within the government established the United States as a democracy where citizens were able to have a say in government and have representation within the government. We will be learning more about the three branches of government, the concept of checks and balances within government, and the leadership within each branch of government as well.
