Summer School
Summer School
From June 6 through July 1, your children can participate in Hawthorn's summer school program, which is a free, fun, caring place for your children to continue learning during the summer. You can register online for summer school at the same time your verify your enrollment and residency, which begins April 4.
Kindergarten enrollment is just around the corner, and we have important information for you if you have children starting kindergarten this August. Children who turn five on or before July 31 are eligible for kindergarten for the 2022-2023 school year.
- Enroll your kindergartener beginning April 4 in Infinite Campus.
- Save the date for Kindergarten Kickoff, which will be from 5 to 7:30 p.m. on May 5. You and your child will get a chance to explore Hawthorn and get excited for kindergarten. You can use the link below to sign up for the time you would like to visit.
- Get ready for our first day of school on Monday, August 22. We will be contacting you to schedule a kindergarten readiness assessment, so we can be ready to meet your child's educational needs.
4th Quarter Updates to Volunteer Procedures!
Volunteers will be allowed back in school starting with the fourth quarter on Monday, March 21. We will have a few new rules in place to protect the safety of our students. This is partly a result of a state law about volunteer screenings.
- Any volunteer who will be alone with students must have a full screening, which includes a criminal background check using fingerprints, a check of the child abuse and neglect registry, and a check of the sexual offender registry. We have more details about the screening on the district website.
- All volunteers must read and agree to the rules in our policy.
- Each volunteer will sign in and reaffirm the rules each time they arrive at a school to volunteer.
- If you previously completed a background check with Park Hill, you must do it again, because the earlier screening process did not include the criminal background check.
Please note that to volunteer in our schools, you must coordinate with your child's classroom teacher to see whether there is a volunteer position open for you.
Visitors who will never be alone with students will not need a full background screening, but they will use our sign-in process, which checks the sexual offender registry.
Visitors During Lunch
- Sign up for the date you would like to join your child's class. Please note that there is only space for one guest per class per day.
- If you would like to order a school lunch for yourself, please let the classroom teacher know by 9:15am, so your order can be added to the lunch count.
- Each class is scheduled for a 20 minute lunch so plan accordingly.
- You are welcome to bring your child a special lunch from their favorite restaurant, but due to a variety of significant food allergies, we will provide you "VIP seating" (a separate table for you and your child) to ensure all students are safe.
Since we have not had lunch visitors for two years, it may take us a few weeks to 'get back in the swing' and we appreciate your patience as we readjust our processes. If we discover that we can comfortably accommodate more guests at lunch we will add more time slots. Likewise, if we find that we are having a hard time managing the current number of visitor slots, we will edit our current signup. Thanks for understanding.
If you would like to join your child for lunch, you can sign up here: HAWTHORN LUNCH VISITORS

No-Tax-Increase Ballot Propositions
No-Tax-Increase Ballot Propositions
Paid for by the Park Hill School District
The Park Hill Board of Education placed Proposition I and Proposition N on the April 5 ballot.
o Proposition I:
Proposition I would allow us to maintain the community’s investment in our facilities and bring them up to date. It would also let us build a 12th elementary to help us move students out of classroom trailers and maintain class sizes.
o Proposition N:
Proposition N would help us maintain our high-quality school operations, including keeping our staff salaries competitive so we can recruit and retain the best teachers and support staff.
o I+N=No Tax Increase:
Together, these questions mean no tax rate increase.
See the website for more information, including what is in them for Hawthorn.

Volunteers are always needed! Thank you all so much for the numerous donations, however we often have a difficult time hanging up all of the incoming clothes. There are two sign up genius links for volunteers: There is one sign up genius for the 2-4 pm timeslot every Tuesday that doesn't have shoppers present. That sign up is here and students are welcome to help out https://www.signupgenius.com/go/508084fa4a72ba0fa7-canyou
There is a second sign up for the Tuesday 10-12pm and 5-7pm slots when shoppers will be there. When shoppers are present we can't have students helping due to confidentiality. That sign up is here: https://www.signupgenius.com/.../508084fa4a72ba0fa7...

Positive Behavior Intervention & Supports
School-wide Positive Behavior Intervention & Support (SWPBS) is a systems approach to establishing the whole-school social culture and intensive individual behavior supports needed for school to achieve social and academic gains while minimizing problem behavior for all students. SWPBS is NOT a specific curriuculum, intervention or practice, but a decision making framework that guides selection, integration and implementation of scientifically-based academic and behavioral practices for improving academic and behavior outcomes for all students. A central feature of SWPBS is implementation of behavioral practices throughout the entire school. SWPBS defines practices that all students experience in all parts of the school and at all times of day.
- Fewer behavior problems
- Improved school climate
- Reduction in discipline referrals
- i.e.—Every faculty and staff member will have a protocol to follow.
- Safer schools
- More time spend on instruction and less on discipline
The power of PBIS at Hawthorn is that we have building wide expectations for all areas of the building. The expectations focus on four key behaviors:
- Be Safe
- Be Kind
- Be Smart
- Be Your Best
When students demonstrate these expectations they are honored with a building wide currency (PAW POINT) which they can exchange for menu items. Students are responding well to this and working hard to earn a lot of PAW POINTS!
Planning Now for Inclement Weather-- AMI DAYS
- Park Hill may use 5 days of AMI (Alternate Methods of Instruction) on days when the weather makes it unsafe for travel.
- Should we use 6 or more bad weather days, all students and teachers would have the snow day off.
- All students will have distance learning on AMI days from 9am-3:40pm, with a break from noon to 1pm.
- Students should check their online learning platform (Schoology or Seesaw) at 9am to see what teachers have planned for the day.
- Teachers will have planning time from 8am to 9am and should have lessons posted by 9am.
- Teachers will be available to students between 9am and 3:40pm, with the exception of an hour for lunch/planning from noon to 1pm.
Should school be canceled due to weather conditions, your child's teacher will communicate all lesson expectations with you by 9am.
