From Mrs. Lane...
North Road Elementary is VERY EXCITED to become a partner school with The Positivity Project! The Positivity Project (P2) is a 501c3 non-profit organization dedicated to helping America’s youth build stronger relationships by recognizing the character strengths in themselves and others. Our vision is to create citizens and leaders who will enhance our communities and country by internalizing the belief that “Other People Matter.”
Each week North Road Elementary will focus on one of 24 different character strengths. Each morning students may talk about the weekly character strength, watch a short video, write a journal reflection, or create a small project related to that week's strength! The link below will take you to our weekly calendar of character strengths in hope that you will continue these valuable conversations at home as well.
This week we are talking about why "Other People Matter" which is the P2 motto! Some questions you can use to help start a conversation at home include:
What does the motto "Other People Matter" mean to you?
How have you seen people build strong relationships?
What would it look like to live with the mindset that “Other People Matter”?
Next week (Sept. 16-22) we will focus on the Character Strength of Curiosity! Curiosity means you like exploration and discovery. You ask lots of questions because you want to learn about anything and everything. Some questions you can use for Curiosity include:
Why is this strength important?
How do I use this strength?
How do other people use this strength?

Re: HOMEWORK for Parents due Friday, Sept. 14
Dear North Road Parents:
Attached to this letter are instructions on how to log into ParentVUE which will allow you to view your child’s course schedule, attendance, and communicate with your child’s teacher through email.
Most importantly, you will be prompted to complete your Student Emergency Contact Information, along with electronically signing documents, including our Student AUP (Acceptable Use Policy), Permissions to Photograph Release, etc.
Please visit our district webpage at www.fentonschools.org and click “Synergy ParentVUE” at the top; then select “I am a parent,” and “I Have an Activation Key and need to create my account.” Please do NOT enroll as a new student; you will just need to update the information that we already have in the system for you.
Also, please know that both parents will receive a letter with activation codes. Both parents do not need to update this information. This simply allows parents who may want to create separate accounts the ability to do so.
PLEASE complete this by Friday, September 14, 2018.
We appreciate your time and attention as we gather up-to-date and accurate contact information for all of our families!

Meet North Road's New Teachers
Mrs. Johnston
My name is Mrs. Kelly (Godmar) Johnston and I am thrilled to be returning to North Road Elementary as the early elementary special education resource room teacher. I grew up in Fenton and graduated from FHS, Go Tigers!. I completed my undergrad studies at GVSU where I was a cheerleader and competed nationally. I earned my masters degree in literacy from the University of Michigan-Flint. My husband and I reside in Clarkston with our almost 2 year old daughter, Libby and dog Murphy. We are expecting our second child near Thanksgiving. I enjoy spending time with my family, being on the lake and dabble in home decor. My favorite subject is reading and love to collect children’s literature. I am so looking forward to working with the amazing students, families and staff at North Road Elementary.
Mrs. McDonald
Mrs. Rollier
My name is Barbara Rollier and I am the new School/Home Coordinator at North Road Elementary. I have been a clinical social worker for over 25 years and most of my work has been helping students and their parents in a school setting. In this position, I will be providing social-emotional support, behavior interventions, addressing family needs, and referring families to community resources. I am happy to help so please contact me at 810-591-1507 or brollier@fentonschools.org.
W.I.N. Time
W.I.N. stands for “What I Need.” It is a 45 minute period of the elementary school day when teachers can meet with groups of students for reteaching and enrichment of skills. It is also a time of day when students needing special services - English Language Learners, Special Education, Title 1 support - can receive those services. All students will be involved in W.I.N time working with teachers to strengthen and extend their skill across many curriculum areas.
During W.I.N time students will participate in skills-based instruction based on what each of their individual needs are. This may include small group, large group and one-on-one instruction. Groups of students will be taught by classroom teachers, literacy specialist, title one para-educators, and special education teachers.
We are excited to explore the many ways W.IN Time will allow us to meet the needs of each individual student! Please feel free to reach out to Mrs. Lane with any questions you may have.
News from the Art Room...
I am happy to say that last years transition to digital portfolios through the Artsonia digital art museum was very successful.
Its great have a tool that helps me communicate with parents and guardians and allows us to view and give feedback on student work in a digital portfolio. We also raised upwards of $400.00 for the art program at North Road!
One of the things I love about my position is that I have many students for their entire elementary career and it’s so fun to get to know them and watch them grow as people and artists. Remember that this portfolio follows your student EVERY year and is an awesome way to see them develop. If you have already granted permission to participate in Artsonia last year and your email is the same you are all set.
If you have not granted permission watch for the Arsonia notes with student codes coming home soon.
I am currently looking for some volunteers to help upload artwork, as you can imagine it is a big job. You could do this any time your schedule allows and it is super easy. All you need to do is snap a photo edit and upload right from a phone or my IPad with the Artsonia app.
Please contact me at slaw@fentonschools.org if you would be interested in assisting with this process or for any questions.

Remember, PTO meetings are the first Tuesday of the month at 9AM in the library (with occasional evening meetings TBA). We'd love to see you there!
Popcorn forms should have come home with your students. Bags are $.50 each and you can either send in the form and prepay for the entire year or send money in with your child on the day. Prepay forms and payment (cash or checks made out to North Road PTO) are due by Wednesday, September 26.
Mark your calendars because North Road is having a fall festival on Friday, October 26! There will be games with prizes, activities, raffles, food for purchase and more. Come enjoy a family fun night that directly benefits our school.
Attendance Awareness Month
The Fenton Area Public Schools encourage all students, even our youngest Tiger Cubs to strive for consistent attendance! Showing up for school has a huge impact on a student's academic success starting in Kindergarten and continuing through high school. We take this seriously and monitor each student's attendance regularly. Help us by making sure your student comes to school on time every day!
Did You Know?
Students should miss no more than 9 days of school each year to stay engaged, successful and on track to graduation.
Starting in Kindergarten, too many absences (about 18 days absent) can make it harder to learn.
By grade 6, absenteeism is one of three signs that a student may drop out of school.
Attendance is an important life skill that will help your child graduate and keep a job.
Schools have to report absences to the state. Chronic absenteeism can be seen as educational neglect or truancy.
When do absences become a problem
Chronic Absences - 18 or more days
Warning - 10 to 17 days
Satisfactory - 9 or fewer absences
What can Parents do?
Make school a priority!
Inquire about your child's day. Keep in their loop, know their social contacts and be aware of what is happening in class.
Help your child maintain a healthy routine; such as consistent bed time.
Allow your child to miss school only if truly necessary; fever, throwing up, or eyes are pink and crusty.
Avoid appointments and extended trips when school is in session.
