Karen Pitts, Media Specialist

September 19, 2022

Multiple classes were able to enjoy a time of "Book Browsing" in the library media center over the past week. Students were given eight different genre stations with multiple books from that genre to spend time reviewing and rating. After students visited all of the stations, they were encouraged to check out books that they found that they might enjoy. Many of these classes were selecting books for upcoming book projects in their ELA classes. Ask your student what they are reading and remember that you can log into their Destiny account by using their lunch number and see what they have checked out from our library media center. Thank you for your support of literacy at Madras Middle School!

Student Sleep Health Week

It is recommended that middle school-aged students sleep between 8-10 hours per night. This can help students maintain healthy habits as they will be well-rested for the day’s activities! Here are some tips for how students can improve their sleep:

  • Transition into a more structured sleep schedule

  • Gradually shift bedtime at least 15 mins earlier each night and wake up 15 minutes earlier each morning until you are on the right schedule.

  • Create a quiet, cool sleep environment

  • Develop a relaxing nightly routine, which may include reading, journaling, or taking a warm bath or shower

  • Restrict screen time before bed

  • Maintain a consistent sleep schedule, no matter what you will do the next day.

Getting enough sleep is important for everyone!

Visit https://sleepeducation.org/student-sleep-health-week-setting-students-success/ to find more information on how sleep may be affecting your student, and what you can do to help.

Important Notice Regarding Free and Reduced Meals

Parents, CCSS enjoyed serving all of our students breakfast and lunch at no-cost this year, but current guidance from USDA does not allow us to serve free meals to all students in the 2022-2023 School Year.

It is encouraged that you fill out our online free and reduced meal application for your family. Any free or reduced meal application completed in the 2021-2022 School Year that is given an eligibility of free or reduced will carryover into the 2022-2023 School Year for the first 30 days of school or until a new application is processed (whichever occurs first).

Dropping Off Items for Your Child During the School Day

Dropping off Lunches or Medication: If a student forgets a lunch at home, parents may drop it off at the front office, and students will be called to pick up their lunch at the beginning of their scheduled lunch time. If a student needs medication, it can be dropped off at any time for the school nurse.

Dropping off Other Items:

Any other item dropped off for students during the school day may be picked up after school. Instruction will not be interrupted for students to pick up items during class. This includes forgotten homework, Chromebooks, shoes for PE, projects, etc. Students are responsible for bringing needed materials to class daily. If these items are brought to school during the day, we are happy to make an announcement at the end of the day for your child to pick them up in the front office.

Big picture

Student Cellphones and Electronics

Cell phones and Smartwatches may not be used during the instructional day and must be turned off and put away at all times. Students are permitted to use a phone in the front office during school hours for emergencies or for illness. Students should not use a cell phone or smartwatch to call home or text when sick. Any student who is ill should go through the Madras clinic. The school nurse will call parents directly. Calling home for homework, a school project, or to make arrangements to attend an after school event that wasn't previously arranged ties up phone lines and is not permitted. Students may call home if:

  1. There is a transportation issue,
  2. Lunch or lunch money is needed,
  3. There is a dress code issue.
  4. The student is sick or needs medication (must call from the clinic under the nurse's supervision).

We appreciate your help in keeping interruptions to a minimum.

Monitoring Progress, Grades, Assignments, and Attendance

Student Portal

Students will be assigned a login for Student Portal which will allow them to regularly monitor their grades and assignments. Once logged on the first time, they will be prompted to change their password. Students should keep this in a secure location and should never share the password with others.

Parent Portal

Parent Portal provides access for parents to view students' attendance, grades, schedules, lunch balances, and other useful information. It also allows teachers to communicate with parents via the portal. You can enroll HERE, (directions) If you have questions about your portal account or are having trouble logging in, please contact Student Information Services by emailing infinitecampusportal@cowetaschools.net.

Chromebook Reminder

Please remind your student to bring his/her fully charged Chromebook to school each day. The school has limited loaners to give students whose computers are being repaired, but there aren't enough Chromebooks to lend students who forget to bring theirs each day. Regular routines in preparing for each day can help students remember to pack needed instructional supplies daily.
