Reader's Theater
Literacy Strategy #36
Purpose
The purpose of Reader's Theater is to help student develop reading fluency. In this strategy, you can almost completely strip away everything but the student's voices, gestures and facial expressions. This helps them to bring the text to life.
Steps
1. Pick a script
-Read through and discuss like any other text and then have students volunteer.
2. Rehearse the production
-Students decide how to use their voices, gestures and facial expressions.
-All about interpretation
3. Stage the production
-On stage or in your classroom.
-Can be presented to a special audience or your own class.
When?
This is great to use during a thematic unit! Students can create a script from a story that they are reading or the teacher can give them a script.
