February 2018

From the Principal

In celebrating the 100th day of school, it is hard to believe that we only have approximately 80 days of school left in the 2017-2018 school calendar! The month of January proved to be full of surprises for students, staff and parents as we navigated the unpredictable side of mother nature. I want to thank everyone for your flexibility and understanding as we work through delays and school closings. Young children typically function best in a predictable environment (and so do most adults for that matter). With significant temperature fluctuations and the difficulty of forecasting winter precipitation in the Valley, our instructional routine is occasionally interrupted. As any resident of Rockingham County can tell you, the weather in Grottoes can be very different from what people experience in Bergton! With fluctuating temperatures, we also saw a rise in student illnesses. As with so many other schools, we have had numerous confirmed cases of the flu over the last several weeks. I want to thank everyone for following the RCPS policy of keeping your child home for 24 hours after they no longer have a fever. In this way, we are able to minimize the spread of this very infectious and very dangerous strain of sickness. As always, I appreciate the understanding and flexibility of our parent community. Thank you for all that you do to support your child's education at Ottobine!

Wear RED

OES is going to have a Wear Red Day to support the American Heart Association (AHA) on Wednesday February 14th. Through the AHA, students learn about keeping their hearts healthy and how they can make a difference in the lives of others! We are going to be selling paper hearts the week of February 12-16 in the morning and during PE for $0.25. Students can buy the hearts in honor of themselves for working towards a healthy heart, in honor or in memory of someone they know that has heart disease or has had a heart attack. The hearts will be displayed in the gym for the month of February and then the students will be able to bring them home. All the money collected will go directly to the American Heart Association to support their education and research. Encourage your students to wear red on February 14th and any other help you can provide would be greatly appreciated!

From the Library

RCPS Spelling Bee:
We are super proud of Brayden Gowers who represented Ottobine Elementary School in the Rockingham County Spelling Bee at Elkton Middle School on January 11. Competing against very bright students throughout our division, Brayden was one of the last remaining elementary students, and we are proud of the way he represented our school!

Students, Parents and Family Members and Friends:

We need your help! While many of our teachers are encouraging students to stay hydrated and drink water throughout the day, we have several instances where books have been returned with water damage from spills in backpacks. Please, be sure that water bottle containers have tops that are tight and secure so that they will not leak.

Thank you for helping take care of our library books!!

From the Office

When sending in money for field trips, etc., please make sure that you send in the correct change. We DO NOT have change in the office.

****Please make sure that all jackets and lunch boxes have students names.

From the Nurse

Parents, please remember that no medication can be given without signed permission. Also, children may not carry any medication at school. This includes cough drops. An adult must drop off all medication. Medication authorizations are available in the office and in the nurse's clinic. A fever is considered anything greater than 100 degrees. Also, please make sure that your student is wearing a jacket to school each day. The clinic is always in need of Clorox wipes and Lysol spray.
