2...Notes on articles from Dr. G
Suspending Damage
Look for ways to avoid simply framing the group for which you are advocating as “victims” in need of other’s rescue. Be sure to show how members of that group are already advocating for themselves… on their own terms.
Cultural Capital
Look for ways to include the kinds of cultural capital held by the group for which you are advocating. This can come from how those groups are already advocating for themselves, with what specific knowledge or experiences that are valued among people like them but perhaps not by all of society. You might link this idea of cultural capital to funds of knowledge. They are related, but not the same.
Driving Question: How are all our projects interrelated?
- How might the subject you covered relate or be impacted by the subject being presented?
- Website plugs
- Referring to others’ booths on Quad Day
- Politely asking if you may use a specific point to boost your own, and then citing their work!
3. Speed peer review!: 11:15-12:30
Meet with your group and CONNECT. (10-15 min)
- How will you start?
- Use the peer review sheet of your own and the Quad Day rubric to help inform your talking points.
- How will you finish?
- You’ll have 5 minutes to talk about your project, so make it count!
TO KEEP IN MIND WHILE REVIEWING
- Your questions and feedback will help the group give a stronger presentation on Quad Day, so don't just be nice
- Is it clear who their target audience is?
- If you feel moved by their presentation, is it because you've taken this course? What about people on the Quad who haven't take this course?
