...was a huge success! Thanks to Mrs. Weber, Mr. Rawley, Mrs. El Fadili, Mrs. Monts and Mrs. Hawks for being our awesome readers! We had a ball!
Thanks to James Riley for visiting with our third through fifth graders in January. He was exceptional! We are LOVING the Story Thieves series!
Classroom Happenings
Kindergarten classes have been so busy. We have been working on fiction and nonfiction with winter and Martin Luther King. They did author studies of Jan Brett and Eric Carle and also learned about groundhogs and Groundhog Day.
First grade classes have worked on a Martin Luther King research and created presentations. We worked on nonfiction text features and inferencing with nonfiction. I'm so impressed with their abilities to gather information from nonfiction sources!
Second grade worked on nonfiction text features using animal books and research with biographies, as well. They have learned about the biography section and how to access books for their research on a person! Animal research has begun! Each second grader has an animal they are researching. The notefacts they are writing are amazing and very focused! They are really applying all we learned about nonfiction text features. Additionally, we spent a lot of time on the aspects of traditional literature. Ask your second grader about "told and retold".
Third grade is deep into their work with traditional literature. We've learned about all six kinds and are delving deeply into each one. Kids know where the books are located and attributes of each of the six kinds. Our "Fairy Tale Lady" will visit soon to culminate this unit! Classes working on National Parks will Skype with Acadia National Park's ranger to learn about the geology, history and nature of that park! Nonfiction text features were studied, as well.
Fourth grade has been deeply involved in research as well. Mr. Sananikone's classes researched energy and created amazing Google Slides to share their information. Mrs. Jimenez's classes finished Texas Native American research by creating Slides as their product, as well. Ask them to show you their Slide Presentation if you haven't seen it already! Additionally in the library, Mrs. Yesland and Mrs. Hughley worked on figurative language in poetry while in the library.
Fifth grade in Mrs. Matula's classes are learning about biographies. They created amazing "Bio Cubes" as the product for their learning. Mrs. Tamez's classes used nonfiction text features to gather information for research in preparation for a study in social studies of westward expansion. Mrs. Davis' friends worked on traditional literature and the elements involved with that. They are currently doing "Bio Poems" with African Americans who have made great contributions. Everyone is working on informational texts, too! Great work!
