A Message To Families From Mr. Peck
Riverview Families,
It is I Love To Read Month and at the beginning of February we challenged our learners to read 5000 books before the end of the month. We agreed that if they made it to 2500 that we would hold a school-wide "Drop Everything and Read (DEAR)" event and if they made it to 5000 that I would have to wear a wig for a day. Our students are off to a fast start with multiple classrooms already having read 100s of books. They are motivated, taking it seriously, and finding extra time in their days to put their nose in a book. Many learners are telling us that they are spending extra time reading at home as well, and for that we thank you. Thank you for making reading at home a priority and helping your child develop a lifelong love of reading. I am very confident they will meet and surpass their goal (and also a little nervous about having to wear the wig!).
Also, we recently shared the link to sign up for our upcoming parent/teacher conferences which will take place on March 5 & 7. You will find the link below as well. These spring conferences are a great opportunity for parents and teachers to touch base, chart progress, and share important information. We hope to see all of our Riverview Families during conferences!
Best wishes for a great week!
Shawn Peck
Principal

This Friday, February 16 is a Flexible Learning Day
The term “flexible learning day” refers to a school day when instead of coming to a school building teachers and students communicate online using Seesaw or Schoology, our digital learning platforms. Teachers share assignments and hold virtual office hours while students complete assignments and receive guidance from teachers.
Our world is becoming pervasively digital and having the skills to learn well online is critical. Much of college curriculum and business training are today done this way, and this will only continue to grow. Our flexible learning days are a great transition step to this. Our teachers are still actively engaged with students, directing and overseeing their work.
How planned flexible learning days work:
- Assignments will be posted in advance of the flexible learning day, no later than the evening before the scheduled day.
- Teachers will hold office hours from 10-11:30 am district-wide on the flexible learning day.
- The due dates for flexible learning day assignments will also be flexible to accommodate varying schedules. Please contact your child’s teacher if you have specific questions about due dates.
Sign Up For Spring Parent/Teacher Conferences
Parent/Teacher conferences will take place on Tuesday, March 5 & Thursday, March 7. Here is the link to sign up for a conference with your child's teacher. You will also have the opportunity to meet with special education teachers, multi-language teachers, counselors, and other staff at RVES if you'd like. You can request an interpreter right on the registration form if you would like and of course, you can always reach out to your child's teacher or the RVES main office if you need any assistance. We hope to see you and your family during conferences!
This Week's Mystery Reader Revealed!
Each day during I Love To Read Month, on our morning announcements, a clue is given about who our mystery reader is. Then on each Friday, the identity of the reader is revealed when they watch a video of that person reading a story to them. Last week, Ms. Asher-Carlson was our Mystery Reader. This week, we learned that our mystery reader loves Dr. Seuss books, grew up in North Dakota, enjoys fishing and the outdoors, has two children, and played college football. Who could it be??? Watch the video below to see who it is and to enjoy a classic from one of the best known authors ever.
RVES To Partner With Sprout School Supplies For 24-25 School Year
For the upcoming school year, families will have the option to make a single purchase and receive a prepackaged school supply kit that includes everything on the supply list. The company we are partnering with, Sprout School Supplies, buys their products in bulk prior to distributing so there is a cost saving for families. Families will still have the option to buy things off the list in the traditional way, but if this option works for you the instructions for doing it will be shared closer to the spring.

Please Limit Candy, Gum, and Flavored Drinks at School
Students are increasingly bringing candy, flavored water, caffeinated drinks, and gum to school. These are not allowed for snack or throughout the day. It would be very helpful if you would please remind your child that they need to stay at home.
Friendly Reminder: No Food/Treat Sharing - Even on Special Days
With Valentines Day coming soon we want to share a reminder of the ISD 192 health and wellness procedure when it comes to food. We strive to ensure a safe and healthy learning environment for every person here and due to the high number of allergies and food-related illnesses present in our schools we have restricted the sharing of food, treats, snacks, etc. This means that students should not bring in any food item to share with others, even on special days like birthdays or holidays. We kindly request that if your child would like to bring valentines to share with others in their class, that they stick to non-edible items. We appreciate your help in keeping everyone safe at school.
