E-Hall Pass
This past week, we lauched the use of e-hallpass, a digital hallpass to be used within our school. This will allow us to easily manage hall traffic during classes, create appointments to meet with students (counselors, work based learning coordinator, etc.), and keep our building more secure. Several other MNPS schools have already adopted the program and the feedback is nothing but positive. If you’d like to learn more about e-hallpass, visit the E-Hallpass Website.
Congratulations
Midstate Band
Congratulations to the following 17 band students on auditioning and being selected for the 2023 Middle Tennessee (Mid-State) Honor Bands and Orchestras! In preparation for auditions, students had to perform two complex musical etudes, 12 major scales, and 3 sight-reading pieces. The students who performed the best were selected to be part of the mid-state honor ensembles, conducted by professional conductors from all over the country. We are so proud of our students who competed against hundreds of other Middle Tennessee students and came out on top!
Wrestling Champions
Congratulations to our boys' wrestling team on being crowned 2023 Dual District Champions! Join us on Saturday, February 11 for the Wrestling Regional Championships hosted by Overton!

Johns Hopkins Opportunity
Summer Health Conference available to all grades
The Directors of The Global Health Leaders Conference at Johns Hopkins University would like to invite the students of John Overton High who are interested in global health and medicine to apply for their 2023 virtual summer program.
Their international conference is a Johns Hopkins University student and faculty-led program open to students in grades 9-12. Through their conference, students from around the world learn about issues in global health, public health, and medicine through world-class lectures from leaders in these fields, develop connections with like-minded exceptional students, and share their own work and ideas on global health-related topics at the international scale. Featured speakers at their conference have included leading global health researchers, renowned professors, physicians, policy developers, and Nobel Prize winners. In short, the purpose of their program is to reach passionate students of all backgrounds from around the world and develop the next generation of leaders in global health, public health, and medicine.
Virtual conference programming will be held throughout the summer of 2023. The conference consists of a series of multiple virtual events on multiple days throughout June-August 2023. If an admitted student cannot attend parts of the programming live, there will be asynchronous options for students to watch the content they miss. The conference registration fee for admitted students is 99 USD; if the fee places a significant financial burden on a student’s family, financial assistance is available as they do not want the fee to be a barrier for any deserving student. There are also no application fees.
The conference application is available on their website (https://glohea.org) and will be accepted until March 31st, 2023. Each year, admission into their program is competitive, so they highly encourage students to apply at their earliest convenience.
Please do not hesitate to email their team at ghlcjhu@glohea.org or visit their website if you would like any clarification or have any questions.
Academy Showcase
Academy Selection is Underway for Freshmen
It is time for our freshmen to select their academy and pathway. During January, students will be exploring the different academy and pathway options, the careers related to each one and the opportunities for college credit and industry certifications provided. Teachers have also been going over YouScience results to help students understand their natural talents and skills, as well as the career areas in which they show a strong interest. Students will make their selections in class February 6-7. Placements will be posted on Schoology on February 10. Once students are placed, changes will not be made. If you would like to know more about our academies, please visit https://bit.ly/JOHSAcademies. If you have questions, please reach out to Sally Spear at sally.spear@mnps.org.
Parents Needed!
We are looking for one or two parents from each academy to serve on advisory boards. The boards consist of business partners, teachers, students and parents who meet once per quarter. In these meetings we often discuss labor market data for the academy, trends in hiring and skills needed in the workforce, and opportunities for students to connect to the industry. The meetings take place during the school day and last for approximately one hour. If you are interested in participating, please reach out to Sally Spear at sally.spear@mnps.org.
