FITNESSGRAM Testing in PE
All 3rd - 5th grade OMS students will be participating in the FITNESSGRAM physical fitness fall assessment from August 27- September 14 in their Physical Education classes. FITNESSGRAM establishes a baseline from which students can set goals and check progress to maintain and improve their fitness level. It also allows students to experience and better understand important components of health-related fitness. As it is never too early to plant the seeds for lifelong fitness, our 1st and 2nd Graders will be introduced to these important components of fitness and FITNESSGRAM activities through warm-up and game activities.
The fitness components being tested are cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength and endurance, and flexibility. The PACER test is progressive, set to music, and for many, a fun alternative to the customary distance run to measure aerobic capacity. To test muscular strength and endurance, students are asked to do as many CURL-UPS as they can at a specific pace using the correct form and 90 DEGREE PUSH-UPS, also to a recorded cadence specifying the pace, using the correct form. Flexibility is tested for both the right and left side of the body by performing the BACK SAVER SIT AND REACH.
FITNESSGRAM uses the Healthy Fitness Zone (HFZ) to determine one’s overall physical fitness. The standards are set especially for boys and girls of different ages using the best available research so HFZs are not based on class averages or any other peer comparisons.
Your student's confidential results will be sent home via email for the fall assessment on
September 28. Students will be assessed again in spring 2019, April 22 - May 10.
If you have any questions or concerns about the FITNESSGRAM assessment, please feel free to email Mrs. Pusateri or Mrs. LaRoe.
