Denmark Country Basics

The capital city of Denmark is Copenhagen. Denmark is a wonderful place to visit and has lots of sights to see. The meaning behind their flag is that it is one of the oldest flags in the world. The best known legend of Denmark's flag is that during a 13th century battle, the king caught the flag before it ever touched the earth and this heavenly talisman is what inspired the royal army of Denmark to victory. In reality the flag may derive from a ensign or crusade banner.


The location of Denmark is on the continent of Europe, and on a peninsula north of Germany. The top 10 must see major landmarks in Denmark are: Roskilde Cathedral, Kronborg Castle, Tivoli, The Little Mermaid, The Cliffs of Mon, The Jelling Stones and Runic Stones,the Amalienborg Castle, The Round Tower, LEGOLAND(Denmark invented Lego's),and Oresund Bridge. Major bodies of water surrounding Denmark are: The North Sea,Kattegat Bay, and Skagerrak Strait. Denmark's geography and environment effect the citizens lives in that Denmark has a completely 100% renewable energy island of Samso using wind, solar, and biomass help by saving clean air from greenhouse gases. Air pollution,drinking & surface water being polluted by wastes and pesticides.


Denmark has a Constitutional Monarchy and is also a Democracy. Margrethe || of Denmark is the monarch and Lars Lokke Rasmussen is the prime minister of this great country. How the leaders of this country are chosen is as follows: The monarch is chosen in that the royal family becomes monarch by law; following legislative elections, the leader of the majority party or coalition usually appointed prime minister by the monarch. Some of the roles, rights, and responsibilities of the citizens are: to vote for legislative who picks prime minister, welfare, high quality education, and flexicunity.


Denmark is a very rich nation in that there GDP per capita is $44,600. Denmark has some money to use and have in that they have a budget of $22.3 billion in revenue, and expenditures of $195.8 billion(2014 est.)The main imports of Denmark are machinery and equipment,and the main exports of Denmark are machinery and instruments. The life expectancy of citizens in Denmark is the total pop. 79.25 years ,the birth rate is 10.217 births for 1000 population(2015 est.)The literacy rate of the total pop. is 99% can read or write. The drinking water source in urban areas is 100%,rural areas 100%,and total pop. 100%.


Traditional Danish clothing is handmade fabric clothes and dresses made of wool or flat spun into yarn. The women themselves wove the dresses and clothes themselves. Modern Danish clothing consists of the same or similar fashion to us American's. The top 2 major languages spoken in Denmark are Danish and English. Major holidays in Denmark are New Years Day-1/1, Easter-4/6, Constitution Day-6/5, Christmas Eve Day-12/24, Christmas Day-12/25, and 2nd Day of Christmas-12/26. The main religion of Denmark is Evangelical Lutheran(official)80% of Denmark population are members of this church. It is a Christian denomination. This religion puts a strong emphasis on sacraments such as baptism and communion. Church services include a sermon, singing of hymns, and observing the sacraments. A popular Danish meal includes a classic roast with parsley sauce and a good Danish beer.


The general weather conditions in Denmark are either sunny, rainy, windy or snowy. Denmark also has 4 specific seasons of spring, summer, fall, and winter. The average yearly rainfall amount is about 724 inches. Rising water levels and increased rainfall which could also put impact on goods and availability of resources but also could ;put flooding issues on the coastal region.


The word Denmark dates to the Viking age and is carved in the famous Jelling Stone-900 AD and the Jelling Stone is now a top 10 must see landmark of Denmark. The introduction of Christianity in Denmark-965 which is now a top contributor to Denmark culture and the majority of citizens are members of this church type.

Compare and Contrast

Language in the U.S. is a main language of English, but in Denmark the top languages in Denmark are Denmark and a pre-dominant 2nd language of English. Denmark has a state religion of Evangelical Lutheran and the U.S. does not have state supported religions. A similarity between the U.S and Denmark is in the language category is that both countries have a top 4 language of English.Another similarity between the 2 countries is that Denmark and the U.S. both have German as a very popular language. The U.S. speaks over 350 languages while Denmark only speaks 8 total languages. The pre-dominate 2nd in Denmark and in the U.S. it is Spanish. A difference between Denmark and U.S. religion is that Denmark has a state supported religion while the U.S. does not. The U.S has many religious groups and Denmark has few religious groups. Both the U.S. and Denmark constitutions state that the citizens have freedom of religion which is great since we both have that freedom. Both countries also have a significant Roman Catholic religious group with Denmark at 3% of population are members and the U.S. at 20.8% of population as members.
