Message from Mrs. Langston
Welcome back everyone and Happy New Year!
2023 is going to be a great year and I can't wait to get started. For some reason, January and February are my favorite months in the school year to teach. Everyone is settled after the holiday breaks and students mature and really take off in reading and math. This month, we will be completing MOY Benchmark Assessments for reading and taking the STAR Math Assessment for math. As soon as all assessments are completed, we will have our second parent-teacher conference at the beginning of February.
As always, reading every night and working on spelling are super important. So, let's get started the right way for this new year by continuing good habits of practice. Thank you always for your support!

How Can I Help My Child With Reading At Home?
First, there will be sentences from Letterland in your child's folder on the take-home side each night which review last week's spelling words. It only takes a few minutes to have your child read them to you. I will include a place for you to initial each night so I know your child has read them to an adult.- Have your child read the spelling words on List A, review words, List B words, and List C words which focus on the phonics and spelling words for the week.
- Here is a fantastic link to decodable books your child can read:
https://www.dpi.nc.gov/students-families/parents-corner/literacy-home-digital-childrens-reading-initiative/online-libraries
On this site, you will find Flyleaf Books which we are reading in class during
small group reading. Please message me if you would like to use this resource and I can
tell you which book your child's reading group is reading for the week. Rereading books
is an excellent practice to build fluency.
- And of course, your child can continue to read books from our classroom library, our school library, or books you have at home.
