Dear Family/Whānau

We are looking forward to seeing many of you at our Matariki breakfast tomorrow morning at 8am in the hall. Friday is New Zealand's first public holiday to celebrate Matariki, there will be no school on this day. Next week we look forward to hearing from learners how families celebrated Matariki.

When I first starting teaching at St James’ some years ago, there was quite a group of retired people or volunteers who came in regularly to listen to our learners reading. I would very much like to start this up again. It would certainly be a positive experience for our learners. If you know of someone who would be interested in supporting our learners in this way, could you please ask them to contact the school office and I could give them more details.

School Board Elections will be taking place next term. At St James' we have been extremely blessed to have been governed by a committed group of Whanāu. I am aware some of our board members will not be seeking re-election. This provides openings and opportunities for others within our school community. As a member of your school's board, you will need to work well in a team and have good communication skills. It can help to have an understanding of the education sector. You may have financial skills, policy or health and safety , knowledge and understanding of particular communities within our school, or experience working within your school and wider communities. Every school board member is well-supported by NZSTA’s range of learning and development opportunities.

Reporting - Your children will be bringing home their mid year progress report on the final Friday of the term, July 8. You will then have an opportunity, if you wish, to discuss this report with your child’s teacher on Tuesday 26 July or Wednesday 27 July. Booking details details will be sent out closer to that time.

We are reporting maths using the PaCT report format. Over the last year we have been having professional development using this programme, from the Ministry of Education. The maths learning and teaching focuses on eight aspects of mathematics which are called the Learning progressions. Additive, Multiplicative thinking, Measurement Sense, Geometric thinking, Using symbols and expressions to think mathematically, Statistical investigations, Patterns and relationships, Interpreting statistical and chance situations.

Below is a diagram showing the reporting format.

Te Ara a Maria - Yesterday morning we were blessed with the arrival of Te Ara a Maria as part of her hikoi at Hato Heemi St James' Catholic School. Thank you to Korty Wilson who accompanied Maria and gave us all the most informative introduction talk and also Fr Brian and Donna Brown who accompanied Te Ara a Maria's Hikoi.

To celebrate the rededication, our Bishops commissioned this new piece of art by Artist Damien Walker. They wanted a depiction of Mary that connects her to Aotearoa. The piece challenges us to see her as a woman of incredible strength and the place she holds in our hearts and our community today.

Te Ara a Maria will be in the School Hall until Thursday morning, we invite families to visit, pray and reflect during her time here at Hato Heemi.

More information on the rededication of Aotearoa New Zealand to Mary, Mother of God, Assumed into Heaven may be obtained from the Te Ara a Maria Mary's Way website and the artwork guide.

Triennial School Board Elections are coming up next term. Elections will take place 5-23 September 2022. All of New Zealand's state and state-integrated schools have a school board which is the Crown entity responsible for the governance of the school. School board members play an important role in shaping the education experience and achievements of students.

The board:

  • ensures every student can reach their highest possible standard in student achievement
  • is the employer of all staff in the school
  • sets the school's strategic direction in consultation with parents, whānau, staff, students and the wider school community
  • is responsible for overseeing the management of personnel, curriculum, property, finance and administration.

St James' Catholic School Board consists of Parent Representatives, Proprietor Appointees, Staff Representative and the Principal.

More information on Becoming a Board Member.

NZSTA hosts a series Kōrari Workshops throughout New Zealand to help people understand the role of school board members and inspire them to get involved – either by standing for election or voting in the mid-terms. Find out more about Kōrari here.
