Happy Birthday Powell Elementary!
Celebrating 25 Years!
A Message from Mrs. Garrison
This year we celebrate our school's 25th Anniversary! It's going to be an exciting year as we celebrate our rich history. Powell Elementary School opened in the fall of 1994 under the direction of Principal, Dr. Dianne Reed. School began that first year housed at Galatas Elementary. Two classes shared a room, one Galatas Elementary class, and one Powell Elementary class. Construction was finally completed and students and staff were able to move into the new school building at 7332 Cochran’s Crossing Drive over the Thanksgiving holiday.
On January 30, 1995, General Colin Powell was in attendance at the dedication of the new facility. Powell Elementary had an enrollment of about 300 students at that time. As General Powell entered the gym, students were singing and waving American flags. It was truly an extraordinary experience!
Powell students and staff honor the General each Thursday by wearing Powell patriotic shirts.
General Colin Powell is an American statesman and a retired four-star general in the United States Army. He was the 65th United States Secretary of State, serving under U.S. President George W. Bush from 2001 to 2005. During his military career, Powell also served as National Security Adviser (1987–1989), as Commander of the U.S. Army Forces Command (1989) and as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (1989–1993), holding the latter position during the Persian Gulf war.
In honor of our 25th anniversary, General Colin Powell sent a special message to share with our students!
I've also included information you will need to have a great start to the year. Please take some time and familiarize yourself with the CISD Elementary Handbook and our campus policies and procedures. Both documents are available on the Powell website.

The Positivity Project: We are excited to be participating in The Positivity Project again this year! The Positivity Project is a 501c3 non-profit organization dedicated to helping America’s youth build strong relationships by recognizing the character strengths in themselves and others. The vision of the project is to create citizens and leaders who will enhance our communities and country by internalizing the belief that “Other People Matter.” Positive psychology’s scientifically validated 24 character strengths serve as the foundation. Positive psychology teaches that people have all 24 strengths within them — and that character is not just skills or behaviors, but rather an intrinsic part of each of us. The program encompasses character strengths, positive relationships, and positive experiences. We can’t wait to see our students grow and realize their strengths through this program.
