Board Engages with Capital Bond Gender Neutral Restroom Project Information

The 2019 Capital Bond includes the building of new Gender Neutral, Single Occupancy
Restrooms for several schools in the district, including West Linn High School, Wood Middle School, Wilsonville High School, and Athey Creek Middle School.

In planning restrooms, the bond project team, district staff, and the architectural team for each project are in the process of using research about restrooms in schools, reviewing design plans from schools around the country, consulting with other school districts, and engaging the community to develop a basic plan to be adapted for use at different school sites.

The restroom design process has many stages, with community input playing an important role. District staff presented early thinking regarding Gender Neutral Restroom design during the Nov. 9 meeting, including sample designs and key components highlighted by students and staff from previous focus groups. Nothing has been decided regarding restroom design at this early stage in the process.

The school district will host a public Listening Session regarding Gender Neutral, Single Occupancy Restrooms on Tuesday, Nov. 17 beginning at 6 p.m. The district will provide context through a brief presentation. The community is invited to provide any comment or feedback regarding this topic at that meeting.

The meeting will be held virtually with meeting details found on the district website.

Interested community members can read about the early planning as well as view the Nov. 9 presentation.

Board Conducts First Reading of New Policy ACB "All Students Belong"

The West Linn-Wilsonville School Board engaged in a first reading of new Policy ACB — All Students Belong — during the Nov. 9 meeting. The policy has been drafted by Oregon School Board Association following the adoption of a temporary Oregon Administrative Rule (OAR) on Sept. 17, 2020.

The new policy aims to protect Oregon's most marginalized students, as well as staff and others. The rule and proposed new policy prohibits the "use or display" of symbols of hate, including the noose, swastika, and confederate flag. The proposed policy can be found on the district website.

The Board will engage in a second reading of the policy with possible adoption at an upcoming meeting.

Board Approves Student Investment Account (SIA) Grant

The West Linn-Wilsonville School Board approved the district's Student Investment Account (SIA) Grant Agreement during the Nov. 9 meeting.

The district was budgeted to receive $7.5 million of SIA money when the grant was approved on April 6, 2020. Due to COVID-19 and the related economic impact on the State of Oregon, the SIA Grant award is now estimated at $2.4 million for the West Linn-Wilsonville School District.

The district will continue to fund portions of the seven SIA strategies and priorities outlined in the district's Continuous Improvement Plan, suspending some strategies pending additional funding in the future.

Read more about those strategies and work taking place in the district by reading the Nov. 9 memo.
