Weather-Related Delays/Early Release
If there is a weather-related two-hour delay on a Friday, our early release schedule will be suspended for that day and classes will dismiss at the regular Monday through Thursday dismissal times (H.S. - 3:00 PM, M.S. - 2:50 PM and E.S. - 3:50 PM).
Please plan for this to be the case for the remainder of the year.
The information below is also available on our website here.
Every weather-related event is unique and requires the consideration of multiple factors in determining whether a delay of classes, early dismissal, or cancellation might be necessary. The final decision is made by the Superintendent/designee.
When hazardous weather threatens:
- The Superintendent/designee will consider input from the Transportation Manager, Custodial and Grounds Manager, area superintendents, and information from local meteorologists and online weather resources.
When a late start is deemed necessary:
A decision is usually determined by 5:30 a.m.
Late start times may vary depending on the weather conditions.
There will be no morning early learning preschool or morning alternative kindergarten classes.

The District must make one decision that is appropriate for more than 16,000 students. We recognize that this decision may not always fit with individual circumstances. Therefore, we support parents/guardians in making the decision that is best for their family.

Transition to Middle School
Dear 5th Grade Parents/Guardians,
Welcome to 2019, 2nd semester and your student’s last semester as an elementary student! Transition opportunities will be offered this spring to support the promotion to middle school. Traditionally in the Cedar Rapids Community School District, a student’s attendance zone elementary school determines their attendance zone middle school. This year your student has multiple options to consider for 6th grade! The CRCSD is excited to offer a variety of school choice for parents in addition to their attendance zone middle school, including two middle magnet schools.
See attachment for more details.
