Goals: Revisited
We began this semester by having goal meetings between teachers and administrators to revisit the goals drafted during August staff development. The day before many of you wrote your goals, I was in the hospital having Willa, so needless to say that January came and I had not written any goals of my own. Not wanting to be a hypocrite, I set out to work on goals of my own before meeting with teachers; however, since I took on the new challenge this semester of serving as Interim Principal, it was hard to know exactly what my goals should be about (other than not to mess up our wonderful school), so I went with a few general goals for self-improvement. Mishler mentioned to me that she had set a reading goal for herself, so I jumped on that bandwagon, and here are the 3 goals I set:
1) Read 12 books by the end of the semester. (Thanks for the challenge, Mish.)
2) Delegate tasks in order to focus on things only I can do (or things I would not feel comfortable letting someone else do).
3) Write as a tool for reflection.
As I look at this list, I am doing really well with one and a half of them. My weekly message in the bulletin has proven to be a great tool for reflection, so I am confident in checking it as very nearly accomplished. I am also far better now at delegating things when I need help than I was in January. However, I am in the midst of two different books, the same two I have been working on much of the semester, AND, I have started a third. The overachiever within me is horrified...even my liberal arts brain can figure out that I should have finished at least 8 at this point to meet my goal. The rebel within me wants to count the books I read to my kids, and then I would be at least 3 times over my goal after factoring in how many times we read a handful of children’s books repeatedly. But that is not the point. I wanted to read more this semester both to read for enjoyment and to read for for professional learning. I read several articles from scholarly sources each week, though, which does impact the purpose of the first goal as well.
Now I find myself, two-thirds of the way through the semester realizing Goal 1 needs some tweaking. My new goal will be to complete the 3 books I am in the middle of and to read at least one educational article per week and share that article with someone who I think would find it interesting. I think this is doable.
How are you doing on your goals? If you’ve completed the goals you set for yourself at the beginning of the year, then what goals should you make for yourself to complete the school year?
May you have a wonderful week!

Sending Work to ISS
Teachers, when you receive an ISS notification for one of your students, please send work at your earliest convenience for your student to complete. If the student is in ISS for multiple days, please send work for the duration of their ISS consequence.
Also, please know that the amount of work sent down for a normal class period traditionally gets completed quickly because of lack of complete understanding or students finishing it swiftly because they have nothing else to do. Consider adding additional resources (textbook, online video or tutorial) to help fill in any gaps where your classroom instruction would have explained the assignment.
