Coaster Construction!
Engineer Your Own Roller Coaster
Children's story book - Roller Coaster (Read by Cynthia)
Coaster Construction
Supplies:
- Pipe insulation (Cut in half lengthwise)
- Marbles
- Masking Tape
- Book "Roller Coaster" By Marla Frazee
A great example of what another class created:
How can you put these materials (parts) together to build a roller coaster?
Pipe Insulation Rollercoaster
Kindergarten Science Curriculum
Standard 3: Students will gain an understanding of physical science through the study of the forces of motion and the properties of materials.
Objective 2: Describe part of non-living things
- Describe how parts are used to build things and how things can be taken apart.
- Explain why things may not work the same if some of the parts are missing.
Awesome example of how kindergartners can be engineers

Use 3 pieces of pipe insulation
You can use any item in the room to help build your coaster.
Modify!
Try many different ways to build your coaster. If at first it doesn't work, try and try again!
Work together as a team
Use the ideas of everyone on your team
How can I extend my learning?
- What would happen if you take a piece off your coaster? Will it still work?
- Try using more pipe insulation
- Connect all the coasters in the room. Could we change our coasters to make one gigantic coaster? Why or why not?
- Try building with different items in the room
