Animal Guide of the Week:
-Laura Craford, RLA Social Worker
For those of you who do not know what the animal cards mean…
Each newsletter I will pull a card from my deck of animal guide cards, it is our message for the week—something we need to think about, understand or that we need to remember about ourselves or a situation. This is something that I have been doing with RLA students and staff for a while now, it’s my thing. 😊 If you ever want your own card, message me (Laura) through teams or @ (740) 240-2311 and I will send you a picture of one, just like when you would come to my office for one when we were in school!

Inoculation against disease was introduced in America by a Boston slave named Onesimus. When there was an epidemic of Smallpox in Boston, Onesimus talked about a treatment that had been used in Africa in which a healthy person was exposed to the disease and developed immunity. He told his slave owner who researched it and then became an advocate for it. So the next time you are inoculated, remember it was a slave named Onesimus who was responsible!!

Gladys Bentley (1907–60)
Gladys Bentley was a Harlem Renaissance blues singer and pianist famous not only for her roaring talent and vivacious stage performances but also for embracing her sexuality and living openly, for most of her life, as a lesbian.
As for her talent she possessed an alto voice and fierce command of the piano and was infamous for creating bawdy parodies for tunes of the day infusing sexually charged content along with bluesy demure. She went from performing at rent parties graduating to speakeasies and night clubs headlining the likes of The Cotton Club and The Apollo and later hosting her own weekly radio program. She was a staple at famed Harlem speakeasy, Harry Hansberry’s Clam House/The Clam House. By 1934 she was well established with her own musical revue made up of male drag queen dancers.

Update from Language Arts…
We made it halfway through the school year! During Hexter 3, we covered some good ground in our Language Arts Classes. This includes Aristotle’s Virtues to Live By, a unit on Friendship, listening to the Serial season 3 podcast (which focuses on stories from the Justice Center in Cleveland, Ohio) and wrapping up with a deep dive into Oregon’s new law Measure 110.
We’re excited to start the new term. We’ll be getting some inspiration from Black History Month for our classes and continuing with the Serial podcast in Lang Arts 3-4. We hope to see you during your scheduled class times as this is the best way to keep up with your work, ask questions and understand what to do.
Remember that we all need to have good friends and people to talk to in our lives. If you can be a good friend to others, please do. If you need a friend, please reach out to those you trust. Take a listen to this beautiful song about friendship from the late, great Bill Withers:
The Language Arts Department wants to invite you to pick up a FREE copy of Ross Gay's book called,
The Book of Delights. Starting on his birthday, he wrote a few paragraphs every day for a year about little (and big) things that he enjoys, loves, finds funny, and "delights" him. We will be getting copies at RLA in the next few weeks if you want to pick one up. Also, notice below, the online event he will host. He is cool, funny, and a nice guy who also loves to garden and play basketball. Check it out!!!
Everybody Reads- Multnomah County Library 2021 Author- Ross Gay

Beginning in February 2021, there will be opportunities to attend online events and discussions. See discussion guide and further reading.
Be inspired.
Ross Gay will speak at an online event on Thursday, April 8, 2021 at 6 pm. Let's get a group from RLA to attend virtually-- maybe some extra credit involved!
