Warner Update
Sept. 4 - Sept. 10
Two weeks in...7 days and counting
This phrase got me thinking and subsequently I posted this blog.
Our conversation was positive and got me thinking that curriculum is what most of us lean on for "normalcy" or "routine". However, it doesn't have to be. Put yourself in your students shoes for a moment and check this out.
This Labor Day weekend I was fairly busy going this way and that. One of my stops was at a restaurant. I was sitting next to some friends when one young man was asked about school. His answer was typical, he said it was a little boring. But then things changed. The follow up question from the adult was, "Which classes do you enjoy going in?" The boy mentioned one in particular. Then the adult said, "Do you have a class you really wish you could skip?" This is a bit of a loaded question, but my ears perked up. The young man named a class and then followed it up with his why. He said, "I don't think the teacher likes me."
WOW! Seven days into the school year and this young man already feels unwanted or disliked by his teacher.
We live in a time that puts ALL the emphasis on test scores. I believe Warner is different. Let's continue to focus on the Whole Child. Let's continue to build up the social and emotional side.
I guarantee no teacher wants to be the one that students want to avoid. We are seven days in, don't feel rushed to force academics down students throats. I encourage you to build your classroom culture. Build the culture that energizes you and your kids each day. I bet it will be your best year yet!
