Term 2, Week 6, Tuesday 7 June 2022
Coming up...
A warm Kohia welcome to three new students who started school today: Mason (Rm 2), Alica and Matilda (Rm 3)
Wasn’t it nice to have that extra long weekend? Staff had a very full but interesting day on Friday exploring in more detail the Aotearoa New Zealand Histories Curriculum document with all the schools in our Kahui Ako (Community of Schools), followed by our first dive into aspects of our literacy programme and how to improve outcomes for students. We very much appreciated the lunch provided by the Board as a thank you for the mahi our staff have done as we have responded to the challenges of the last two years. It was really beneficial to have the full day to devote to our professional learning.
Congratulations to all those students who competed in our school cross country run last Tuesday. Apart from the successes of all the runners it was just so nice to have a whole school event that was not impacted upon by COVID. It was wonderful to see you there as you cheered our students and celebrated their achievements. Thank you to Rachel Ogilvy and Sheryl McEwen for their work to ensure such a great day and a special thank you to Erica Carey, Amber Mander and Kevin Wang for stepping in to help with the organisation.
Our annual report, which includes the audited financial statement for 2021, has now been completed and is available on the school website if you would like to have a read.
Congratulations to the Choudhary, Wilson, Vea, Lim/Hamm and Zhang families for adding up the grand total of numbers in last week’s newsletter. House points go to Hillary (2000), Sheppard (2000) and Snell (1000). This week’s challenge is to go check out the winning house competition 2022 tab on the school website and to let me (alison@kts.school.nz) know how many stars each house has. You will also be able to see who won the cross country house competition (results will be officially announced at our azoombly this week).
Have a great week everyone – Alison
Policy Review
In 2020 we moved to School Docs for managing all school policies and procedures. Whilst we previously had a stringent review process, School Docs has a team of legal advisors to ensure we are keeping in line with changes to legislative changes etc.
Each term there are policies that are tagged for review. To date this term we have reviewed ‘Reporting and Recording Accidents and Incidents’. At the next Board meeting we will be reviewing our Behaviour Management Policy. Remember the user name is ‘kts’ and the password ‘passion’. If you are interested, please have a read of the policy and email me with any suggestions of potential changes or you can email School Docs directly by clicking on the red Under Review badge and lodging your feedback as a parent.
Samoa Language Week
Tālofa lava (hello) to our wonderful KTS community.
Last week, we celebrated Samoa Language Week at KTS. In Koru, students read books such as ‘Lāvalava’ and ‘Fa’a Samoa’, during shared reading, to learn more about the Samoan Culture. In Harakeke, students made some Samoa-inspired artwork and in Pohutukawa we learnt some Samoan phrases.
Did you know that Samoan is the second most spoken language in Auckland, after English?
If your family is free over the next few weekends, why not go to one of the ‘Taste of Pacifica’ events? From food to performance, art, fashion, sport, and wellbeing, Taste of Pasifika showcases and applauds the unique influence and identity of the peoples whose histories, knowledge, creativity, and leadership have contributed to the unmistakable richness of Tāmaki Makaurau.
Tōfa soifua (goodbye)

Crazy Umbrella Day
The Year 6s in the Travelwise team are organising Crazy Umbrella Day on Friday. The goal is to encourage students to walk to school, even if it is a bit damp out there. Students can bring a brolly to school (named if you can). There will be a parade in the juniors and various other umbrella activities.
School Board Parent Election 2022
Nomination round
Our school will be undertaking a parent election for 5 School Board vacancies. This process will start with the issuing of nomination papers to our caregiver community by Friday 15 th July 2022.
We have employed CES to undertake the election process on our behalf. This year with legislative change, our nomination form and full instructions on how to place your nomination into our own School’s Election website will be emailed to you if we have your email address in our database or you will receive it by post if we don’t have your email in our database. Nomination papers will also be available at the school office. The school will send those on to CES for processing upon receipt from candidates. Nominations close on Wednesday 3rd August at 12 noon. Election day is Wednesday 7th September. We look forward to your participation in this process.
