Canvas- Start of Year

What needs to be done BEFORE your first day of using Canvas

1- Get Educated About Blueprints

It is important to understand how Blueprints work before you do anything. A blueprint is a different type of course and is designed to push content to other courses. Content in your Blueprint will be saved for next year so this is where you edit major content and activities. You will sync your blueprint with your temporary courses (the ones created automatically by eschool). If you need to adjust details like due dates for different sections, you would do that in your Temporary courses.

Creating a course and naming it "Blueprint" does not make it a blueprint course.

Once you make a change to content in a temporary course, you break the sync for that piece of content with the blueprint.

Remember, only Blueprints will stick around to use next year.

2- Be sure all temporary courses are associated with the blueprint.

To be certain your temporary courses are associated with a blueprint, look at the cards on the dashboard. If you see the same image on the course card fro your temporary classes as appears on your blueprint, then your courses have been associated correctly and you can sync.

If these are not associated, please email me and let me know!

3- Cross-List Principles Classes into On-Level Classes

Canvas creates separate course shells for your Principles and on-level courses because they have different PEIMS numbers. Cross-listing moves your principles sections into your on-level course shells so that all your kids are in the same course. THIS MUST BE DONE BEFORE YOU START ASSIGNING THINGS!

4- Import your LTHS landing page template

Every school in Frisco is using a consistent landing page for their students. This helps students and parents as they navigate the course. These directions show you how to import our landing page template from Commons.

The landing page is not optional.

5- Personalize your landing page template (and resources page)

Be sure you add your information to the landing page to make it your own!

The purpose of the tutorial schedule is to show students where they can get help at different times and should reflect all of the teachers who are willing to tutor students in your subject.

Personalizing Your LTHS Course Template

If your students cannot see your course when they log in to canvas, it isn't published. Be sure to publish your blueprint and your temporary courses by clicking the button in the top right corner.

This semester, only publish S1 courses. This ensures that students will only see one card for your course in your dashboard. When we get to Semester 2, we will unpublish S1 and publish S2.

Helpful Hints:

  • Encourage students to download the Canvas App. They can also find Canvas through the portal.
  • Have students set their notification preferences to make sure they are notified of upcoming due dates and communications
  • Encourage parents to work with their child to get a parent account created through the Canvas Parent app. Directions here.
