The Rideau Report

April 2019

Principal's Message

"In the spring, at the end of the day, you should smell like dirt." Margaret Atwood

It looks like Spring is finally here, after a tumultuous March which saw rain, snow, sun, and everything in between. Students are excited to be back outside in the sunshine, and many of our classes are running the track daily, trying to complete a marathon, half-marathon, or just getting fit and having fun.

Our Student Action Team led a Character Assembly last week, with a focus on honesty and integrity. We are encouraging students to notice and name instances of these important characteristics, and are tracking our success on our 'Défi de l’intégrité' board in the main hallway.

We have lots of other student groups active this month. Our Eco-Club, under the direction of Mme Orgee, is pushing forward with new recycling initiatives, and a refocusing of our Boomerang Lunch program (see below). Our Colour House Leaders, under the direction of Mme Kennedy, are planning another activity block on April 24, so be sure to wear your colours and show your spirit. We also have our basketball teams picked and starting games, and our road race team beginning practices. Our chess club has its tournament, and our yearbook club is busy documenting it all in our annual keepsake, which will be sold this month.

We continue to work to make our communications with families as effective as possible. We hope this newsletter, our website, and the Limestone App are all steps in that direction, and we are interested in your feedback. You can always email or call the school at 613-546-5901.

Family Games & Math Night

Don't forget that this Thursday, April 4, from 5-7 p.m. we are very excited to host our Games Night in the gym. Come with the whole family to play some board games, card games, and other great games, and learn how these can strengthen and support math learning at home. We will share with parents and caregivers how each game can build different math skills, and families will have a chance to win great games to take home. Pizza, drinks, and popcorn will be available, so you don't even need to worry about supper that night! See you there!

Boomerang Lunches

Our Eco-Club, under the guidance of Mme Orgee, has conducted a waste audit to see what ends up in the garbage. It turns out that a lot of it is food waste and packaging. Some of these items could be recycled or composted at home, where there are better municipal waste services than at school. For that reason we are going to redouble our efforts with boomerang lunches. While some classes already take home all of their unused lunch items, we are now going to reinforce this idea with all of our students. Everything that comes to school in a lunch box, including uneaten food, and all containers, will be returned home at the end of the day for recycling, composting, or re-using. This will let families see exactly what and how much lunch is being eaten by students, and will reduce our overall waste footprint. Thank you for helping make Rideau a greener school!

We are once again working hard on putting together a wonderful, full-colour photo memory book of 2018-2019. April is the month to purchase your yearbook, for $15. Order forms were sent home with students today. You can order online - the information is on the order form, or complete and send your form back to the school with payment. Yearbooks are always a special souvenir of the year - don't miss your chance to get yours!

Pitch In Kingston

Once again this year, Rideau students will be joining students and citizens across Kingston as we clean up our city for Earth Day! This year, the Eco-Club will be organizing and leading the event, with the help of Sustainable Kingston, on April 26. We will be cleaning up our school yard along with some of the neighbourhood parks. Students will wear gloves and will be instructed in safe handling of all materials (including not touching anything sharp or dangerous).

Spirit Days this month

Colibri Snack Bag Fundraiser is on until APRIL 8!
