Last Dollar Grant Application - Opens April
The Crosby Scholars Last Dollar Grant (LDG) is need-based financial aid. Crosby Scholars who complete the Program Senior year with a cumulative weighted GPA of 2.0+ are eligible to apply for a Last Dollar Grant for up to four years.
A scholar must apply for financial aid by submitting a FAFSA to be considered for a LDG and demonstrate not only financial need but also remaining need after the school of choice has awarded aid. To determine eligibility, the Crosby Scholars staff completes a need analysis form on each scholar individually. Even if the LDG is not awarded the first year, scholars can reapply three times. Three documents must be uploaded to the Crosby Scholars Student Portal to support the application:
1. A copy of the scholar’s letter of admission from the institution he/she will attend
2. A copy of the financial aid award letter from the institution he/she will attend
3. A copy of your entire SAR (Student Aid Report)

National Candidates Reply Date is May 1!
No college can require you to commit to attending prior to May 1, the National Candidates Reply Date, with the exception of Early Decision or NCAA athletic scholarship programs. When you have confirmed your enrollment plans, notify the other colleges from which you have received an offer of admission that you will not attend. Those colleges may then offer admission to students who have been placed on a waiting list. Then let us know your plans by adding your college’s name to the profile page of your Crosby Scholars Student Portal.
Don’t get senioritis — offers of admission are conditional upon review of your final transcript. Keep performing at the same competitive level throughout this semester so your grades do not drop. Your college will review your final transcript and may revoke your acceptance if you have performed below the college’s acceptable standards.
Things to Consider when Choosing a College
Still trying to decide where to enroll? Here are helpful stats to check out and thoughts to consider that might help you choose the best fit for your future:
Net Cost: how much you’ll actually be paying annually
Intellectual Development: will I be challenged academically and pushed to excel?
Graduation Rate: % of undergraduate students who complete program
Leadership Opportunities: how can I develop my ability to lead and inspire others?
Students Paying Down their Debt: if students are able to repay loans
Volunteering/Outreach: in what ways do students connect with the larger community around campus?
Post-College Earnings: if students were able to find good paying jobs
Health/well-being: does this school promote healthfulness in all dimensions?
Visit collegescorecard.ed.gov to compare schools side by side.
CFNC College Redirection Program
The College Redirection module allows applicants who have not been accepted into their school of choice to be recruited by colleges they may not have considered; it allows North Carolina colleges to offer admission to interested and qualified candidates.
If you choose to participate in the College Redirection module, your name will be submitted to a "pool" of North Carolina colleges and universities with open admissions space. The "pool" is open from April 1 through August 31, so why not jump in now?
Participation is voluntary and is advantageous for both denied applicants and schools. For more information on the College Redirection module, visit www.cfnc.org/redirection.
Scholarship Opportunities
If you are seeking ways to fund your college education, check out the scholarship opportunities listed on the scholarship applications page in your Crosby Scholars student portal. As each application becomes available, it will be posted on this page. Some deadlines are as early as April 8th (this month)! Check out the newest issue of Money Talk Monday for scholarship announcements! Good luck!
Where Will You Call Home in the Fall?
Update your Crosby Scholars Student Portal with your enrollment plans once you’ve made the final decision. There will be a drop down option on your profile page with most colleges and universities listed. If your school isn’t on the list, e-mail seniorprogram@crosbyscholars.org and we will be happy to add your school.
Final Conference Notes
You are almost finished with the Senior Program! Conference Notes 5 and 6 are now posted. When you meet with your advisor, let him/her know if you feel comfortable finishing the last two Conference Notes in one session. You can also complete them in two sessions if you feel the need.
Conference Notes 5 — April 30/Final Notes — May 31
Summer Savings!
Getting a summer job before college is a great way to save some money before you’ve spent what you don’t have. April is a great time to start looking for a job, because current college students will be home in May and will be on the summer job hunt, too.
Here are some ideas:
- Lifeguarding
- Nannying/Babysitting
- Restaurant host/hostess
- Mowing lawns
- Camp Counselor
- Pet sitting
