Fair Oaks Community School
Message from the Principal
Dear Fair Oaks Community,
Summer is closer than ever and our children are energized and they are enjoying this beautiful weather. Thank you for making sure your children come to school on time and are ready to learn. We are ready to celebrate the first winning class that has had the best on time attendance for the Month of April, on Friday! We will continue the contest in May, so if you child's class didn't win this Friday, they have another chance next month!
On Thursday, April 11 we celebrated a very special graduation at Hoover School. Several of our Fair Oaks parents graduated from the Familias Unidas program that evening, along with parents from, Hoover and John Gill School. I am personally very proud of our parents at Fair Oaks for their hard work and dedication. Their success represents their commitment to supporting their children's achievement in school. So many of you work so hard to provide your children with a good education and I am awed everyday at the commitment I see in so many parents here at Fair Oaks.
Student Academic Awards
We recently celebrated the academic achievements of some of our Fabulous Falcons! If your child won an award you should have received a picture from your child's teacher. We will be holding another academic/achievement awards ceremony on May 5 at 10:30 in the MUB!
Punctuality Contest:
We have held a contest in April to see which class has the best on time attendance for the month of April! Our winner for the month of April is Mrs. Gray's 1st Grade Class!! They had nearly perfect attendance and very little to no late students! Mrs. Gray's class will have a big class party soon. Mrs. Gaona's class won 2nd place and will spend an extra recess to play and Kinder Mrs. Zelen's class won 3rd place and each student gets a Faclon ticket!!! If you students' class didn't win this time, they have another chance in May! Help your child's class win!!

The police will be able to answer questions, share ideas on how to help make the bridge safe to use for all. Currently many homeless sleep on the bridge causing blockages, trash, and unsafe passageway. Please join with the Hoover Community at 8:45 in the Hoover Gym on May 6th. You may email rcarranza@rcsdk8.net if you have any questions.
State Testing Information:
Each year, students in grades three through eight and high school participate in the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP).
This year, your child will take the following test(s), depending on their grade level:
- Smarter Balanced Summative Assessments for English language arts/literacy and mathematics in grades three through eight and grade eleven.
- California Science Test (CAST) in grades five and eight and once in high school
The Smarter Balanced Summative Assessments and the CAST are online tests that measure what your student knows and is able to do. The tests include many different types of questions that allow students to interact with the test questions. Results help identify gaps in knowledge or skills early on so your child can get the support needed to be successful in school.
The CAST testing at Fair Oaks will begin on April 29th 2019 for 5th grade students and continue on 4/30 & 5/1.
You are an important part of your child’s education. To help your child get ready for the test you can:
- Talk about the test with your child. Make sure they are not scared or anxious.
- Tell your child that you and their teacher have high expectations and are both there to help, every step of the way.
- Take a practice test with your child.
- Make sure your child gets a good night’s sleep and a nutritious breakfast before testing.
To learn more about the Smarter Balanced Summative Assessments or the CAST, go to the California Department of Education Parent Guides to Understanding Web page at https://www.cde.ca.gov/ta/tg/ca/parentguidetounderstand.asp.
You also can look at sample test questions on the practice tests, which can be found on the CAASPP Web Portal at http://www.caaspp.org/practice-and-training/index.html.
If you have questions, please contact Jude Noyes, by phone 650.482.2403 or email, jnoyes@rcsdk8.net
Here is the Fair Oaks testing schedule for grades 3-5:
4/29, 4/30, 5/1- 5th Grade CAST (Science) testing 8:30-10:00
5/6, 5/7, 5/8- 3rd-5th Grade ELA testing 8:30-10:00
5/13, 5/14, 5/15- 3rd-5th Grade Math testing 8:30-10:00
We will have some make-up testing dates, so if your child is sick or otherwise unable to come to school then they will have a chance to make-up testing.
Reminder to Monitor your Child's Online Media Use:
As a parent, I am always surprised at the things my children know by perusing sites online. Trying to keep my children away from sites like Pinterest and Youtube is hard enough, and then there are popular social networks like Instagram and Snapchat!
If your child has a phone and/or uses social media accounts, please have frank conversations with them about what they may be posting or viewing online-- as parents, it might be awkward to have this conversation (and your child might resist talking to you about this) but is very important that they are aware of what content might be inappropriate, if they are to see it. They also must know that they can share their concerns about inappropriate content with a trusted adult.
For tips on how to speak to your child about safe internet use, please look at the website https://www.commonsensemedia.org/. And thanks for speaking with your kids about this-- We are in this together!
Maintain the doors and gates closed
Please help to ensure that the doors and gates of the school to the streets are always closed. If leave through the gates, MAKE SURE THE GATE IS CLOSED BEHIND YOU. If you need to enter the school during the day, PLEASE go through the main office only. These security measures are maintained in our secure community. THANK YOU!
Online Learning Apps
You child has a google login and password and is able to log in to their student Clever account at home. Last month I sent home a flyer with how to log in and with your child's log in ID and password. Here is the step-by-step way to log in at home. If your child doesn't remember how to log in, please ask their teacher for their sign on information. Practicing at home is a great way for them to work on their reading and math skills! Thank you!

¡No falten!
