February Value of the Month Student "Honesty" ~ Kami Spurgeon
In Mrs. Edwards' words: "This young lady could be chosen for any value of the month. Kami takes pride in school and shows excellence on a daily basis. She is a role model for honesty and displays mature qualities as a second grader. Kami walks into the classroom every day with a smile on her face and is eager to learn as much as she can! Her actions are contagious and other students follow her lead. She is a hard worker and challenges herself in all areas. I am very proud of her progress this year."
Meet our Staff MVP of the Week ~ Mrs. Kelly Edwards, 2nd Grade Teacher
This week's Staff Most Valuable Player is beloved 2nd Grade Teacher, Mrs. Kelly Edwards!!!
How long have you been teaching and what grades? I have been teaching for 14 years. I have taught developmental preschool, first grade and second grade.
Tell me a little about your family and pets. My husband (Ryan) and I have three great children! Our oldest is a freshman at IUPUI and just joined a sorority. Our son is in 8th grade and is a motivated swimmer. Our youngest is a 4th grader at Brentwood and absolutely loves gymnastics. We have a fat cat named Izzy who is a special member of our family. We are always busy but love our time together.
Some of Mrs. Edwards' Favorites:
TV Show: The news (does that count?? Ha!)
Book: Me First (children’s book)
Restaurant: Kona Jacks
Candy: Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups
What do you enjoy doing when you aren't teaching?
I enjoy spending time with my family when I am not teaching. We are normally at a pool somewhere for a swim meet or at a gymnastics meet. I also enjoy running and working out even when I really don’t feel like it. Reading is also something that I look forward to each day. I am constantly looking for a new series or book to read.
Where is the most interesting place you have been?
The most interesting place I have been is St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands. I have never been so close to iguanas! They walk right up to you as if they are your friend. I saw some of the most beautiful beaches and learned some history as well.
What is a teacher/student moment you remember fondly? (You do not have to use students’ name(s).)
I have several fond moments that I could describe. There is one in particular that happened recently. I was explaining directions for a certain activity and used a vocabulary word in my sentence that we had been working on that week. When I finished the sentence, one of my students yelled out “I love you Mrs. Edwards. I love it when you use our vocabulary words in a sentence.” It is definitely a moment I will never forget!
As a 2nd Grade teacher, what advice do you have for parents on how they can be involved in their child’s education?
The advice I have for parents is to talk more with their children. As a mom my children tend to tell me that their day at school was “good.” It would be easy to leave it at that but it is important to extend the conversation to meaningful talk. It is also important to try to “stop life” for a period of time each day to spend time with children.
Fellow 2nd Grade Teacher, Mrs. Hamlin says, "Kelly is such a compassionate teacher. She cares for each student on a level unlike others. She always has her students best interest at heart. What a great role model to her students! Her kindness is an inspiration to all!"
Kelly is an outstanding teacher! She works hard to ensure that all of her students' learning needs are met through a variety of engaging activities. She loves to make learning fun for the students and genuinely cares for all the students that she works with. In addition Kelly is a true team player! She is always willing to help out whenever needed with no hesitation. I have learned a wealth of teaching knowledge from her. I feel blessed to have been able to work closely with her for the last nine years!" Shares 2nd grade teacher, Mrs. Henry.
The Golden Tray Goes to..........................................
This week's winners are Mrs. Henry's 2nd Grade Class and Mrs. Barker's 4th Grade Class (second week in a row!).

Transportation & Dismissal Info
All car riders arriving in the morning should be dropped off in our car rider lane NOT in our Visitor Parking lot. This ensures they are not crossing over any traffic. If you child is being dropped off late an adult must come into the office with them to sign them in.
If your child rides the bus to school and will be eating breakfast in the cafeteria please talk to them about going straight to the cafeteria to get their breakfast. This will give them the most time to eat a healthy breakfast possible.
- If you need to change your child's dismissal instructions the best way to do this is to send a signed note into your child's teacher.
- If this is impossible please call the office NO LATER THAN 3:00 p.m. to ensure the dismissal change gets to your child's teacher in a timely matter.
If you are permanently changing how your child goes home or if you move please notify our office at 317-839-4802, as well as Transportation at 317-838-3632, and submit a new Transportation Form to the office.
