PTO Spring Carnival Saturday, March 21 5- 8 p.m.

Our Spring Carnival is JUST around the corner and we have LOTS of exciting things planned this year! But we also need LOTS of help! Check out our Carnival Facebook Page or read more about the Carnival on our website HERE.

Each grade is putting together a basket full of donated items to auction off at the carnival. Please look up your grade's theme below:

Kindergarten - Summer Fun Basket

1st Grade - A Night at the Movies Basket

2nd Grade - All Things Sports Basket

3rd Grade - Sweet Tooth Basket

4th Grade - Red Pride Plainfield Quakers Basket

5th Grade - Gift Card Extravaganza Basket

Items can be brought into the office, sent in with your student to their teacher, or placed in the boxes in the front hallway.

***If you want to give a monetary donation AND for gift card donations please send that in a sealed envelope to the office or your teacher with the words "Carnival Basket" on the outside).***

We are also looking for volunteers to help out at the carnival running games, selling tickets, and other needs as they arise. If you can help please contact Andi at asoloero@plainfield.k12.in.us or Rochelle at rclark@plainfield.k12.in.us.

We would like to have enough volunteers that each volunteer would work NO LONGER than a one-hour shift and would then be able to enjoy the rest of the carnival with their student!

Carnival Needs: 2-Liters of Pop & Use of a Pick-up Truck to Transport Carnival Games to Brentwood. Drop 2-Liters off in the Office; Call 839-4802 if you have a Pick-up Truck! ~~Thanks!!!~~

February Value of the Month Student "Honesty" ~ Kami Spurgeon

Second Grade Teacher, Mrs. Edwards, nominated her student, Kami Spurgeon, for the February Value of the Month "Honesty".

In Mrs. Edwards' words: "This young lady could be chosen for any value of the month. Kami takes pride in school and shows excellence on a daily basis. She is a role model for honesty and displays mature qualities as a second grader. Kami walks into the classroom every day with a smile on her face and is eager to learn as much as she can! Her actions are contagious and other students follow her lead. She is a hard worker and challenges herself in all areas. I am very proud of her progress this year."

Meet our Staff MVP of the Week ~ Mrs. Kelly Edwards, 2nd Grade Teacher

This week's Staff Most Valuable Player is beloved 2nd Grade Teacher, Mrs. Kelly Edwards!!!

How long have you been teaching and what grades? I have been teaching for 14 years. I have taught developmental preschool, first grade and second grade.

Tell me a little about your family and pets. My husband (Ryan) and I have three great children! Our oldest is a freshman at IUPUI and just joined a sorority. Our son is in 8th grade and is a motivated swimmer. Our youngest is a 4th grader at Brentwood and absolutely loves gymnastics. We have a fat cat named Izzy who is a special member of our family. We are always busy but love our time together.

Some of Mrs. Edwards' Favorites:

Color: turquoise/gray

Movie: Grease

TV Show: The news (does that count?? Ha!)

Book: Me First (children’s book)

Music: All

Flower: orchid

Restaurant: Kona Jacks

Candy: Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups

What do you enjoy doing when you aren't teaching?

I enjoy spending time with my family when I am not teaching. We are normally at a pool somewhere for a swim meet or at a gymnastics meet. I also enjoy running and working out even when I really don’t feel like it. Reading is also something that I look forward to each day. I am constantly looking for a new series or book to read.

Where is the most interesting place you have been?

The most interesting place I have been is St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands. I have never been so close to iguanas! They walk right up to you as if they are your friend. I saw some of the most beautiful beaches and learned some history as well.

What is a teacher/student moment you remember fondly? (You do not have to use students’ name(s).)

I have several fond moments that I could describe. There is one in particular that happened recently. I was explaining directions for a certain activity and used a vocabulary word in my sentence that we had been working on that week. When I finished the sentence, one of my students yelled out “I love you Mrs. Edwards. I love it when you use our vocabulary words in a sentence.” It is definitely a moment I will never forget!

As a 2nd Grade teacher, what advice do you have for parents on how they can be involved in their child’s education?

The advice I have for parents is to talk more with their children. As a mom my children tend to tell me that their day at school was “good.” It would be easy to leave it at that but it is important to extend the conversation to meaningful talk. It is also important to try to “stop life” for a period of time each day to spend time with children.

Fellow 2nd Grade Teacher, Mrs. Hamlin says, "Kelly is such a compassionate teacher. She cares for each student on a level unlike others. She always has her students best interest at heart. What a great role model to her students! Her kindness is an inspiration to all!"

Kelly is an outstanding teacher! She works hard to ensure that all of her students' learning needs are met through a variety of engaging activities. She loves to make learning fun for the students and genuinely cares for all the students that she works with. In addition Kelly is a true team player! She is always willing to help out whenever needed with no hesitation. I have learned a wealth of teaching knowledge from her. I feel blessed to have been able to work closely with her for the last nine years!" Shares 2nd grade teacher, Mrs. Henry.

Volunteer News & Information:

Chaperones and classroom volunteers play an important role in schools. Without them, creative educational experiences inside and outside of the classroom would be more difficult to accomplish. In order to keep students safe, chaperones and classroom volunteers must fill out the following forms:

  1. Volunteer Background Agreement
  2. Volunteer Confidentiality Agreement (ask at front office the first time you come in to volunteer)
  3. Read & understand our Emergency Procedures Handout (ask for your copy at the front office)
  4. Read & understand our "Facts about Bullying" handout (ask for your copy at the front office)

Some guidelines to follow when volunteering at Brentwood (please refer to our handbook for more):

  • You may only take photos of your own child. Photos may not be taken of friends or other students and should NEVER be posted on social media sources without the consent of the classroom teacher and the other parents.
  • You should avoid taking or making phone calls while supervising students unless for an emergency or communication is needed on a field trip.
  • You should not bring other children along on a field trip.
  • You must immediately report incidents or suspected incidents of bullying, physical, and/or verbal aggression to a teacher.

Transportation & Dismissal Info

Student Arrivals:
All car riders arriving in the morning should be dropped off in our car rider lane NOT in our Visitor Parking lot. This ensures they are not crossing over any traffic. If you child is being dropped off late an adult must come into the office with them to sign them in.

If your child rides the bus to school and will be eating breakfast in the cafeteria please talk to them about going straight to the cafeteria to get their breakfast. This will give them the most time to eat a healthy breakfast possible.

Dismissal Changes:
  • If you need to change your child's dismissal instructions the best way to do this is to send a signed note into your child's teacher.
  • If this is impossible please call the office NO LATER THAN 3:00 p.m. to ensure the dismissal change gets to your child's teacher in a timely matter.

Transportation:
If you are permanently changing how your child goes home or if you move please notify our office at 317-839-4802, as well as Transportation at 317-838-3632, and submit a new Transportation Form to the office.
