I’m Elgin’s Future! College Starts with Me! – Complete the scavenger hunt by letting students gather info from the personalized college “posters” each teacher placed outside her door.
Use these links and ideas to extend learning!
Pre-K and Kinder
· Play “Whose vehicle is this” https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B2pA9lI-6RdPTjJLNkdycnRTaUU/edit?usp=sharing & talk about why each career is important to the community.
· Give each student a vehicle page and ask them to draw a person who does that job on the back and share with the class.
1st and 2nd Grades
· Read “When I Grow Up” by Al Yankovic (YouTube version here: https://youtu.be/P3GViCamOxk) & discuss goal setting
· Set out goal setting posters (samples can be found here: ) and let each pair of students pick one that they want to talk about
3rd & 4th Grades
- Have each student complete a learning styles survey (see below). On the back copy the visual of the multiple intelligences.
- Group students based on highest intelligence area. (Some may have to pick based upon the one they feel is most like them.)
- In groups give them a poster of their kind of smarts that will help them answer questions.
5th Grade
- Each student can complete a 4 page interest survey (see below).
- This will help them with a career cluster that they may be interested in pursuing and narrowing down their interest areas.
After the students self score their surveys, have as many as time will allow share their top career cluster and answer a few questions about it:
- What kinds of careers fall under this cluster?
- What are the strengths of a person in this career?
- What will you have to do in order to have this career? (College? Special training? Improve a specific skill?)
- After sharing, briefly discuss that as they continue their education into middle school, knowing their interests is important because they can expand their knowledge and skills by taking certain classes or joining certain clubs/groups.
- Most 5th graders, at this point in the year, are ready for this kind of conversation.
