Rising Star Pre-K Aug 23-27
Miss Jamie-Classroom Teacher AND Mrs. Cameron-Classroom aide
First week down!!
It was a wonderful first week. We enjoyed getting to know each other and settling in to our routines. We spent time talking about things we like (colors, foods, animals) and have done a lot of work around learning each others names!! This is always hard and will take time.
I am impressed with how quickly the students have fallen into our routines, are following the listening rules, are being good friends and playing together. We are off to such a great start.
I have enjoyed and appreciated being able to touch base with many of you this week regarding your child, questions about how the day goes etc. Please always reach out--no question is worth NOT asking :)
Please continue to be patient with us as we establish routines. We are working very hard to assess each child's level of need, independence and abilities. We work very hard on teaching students to do things for themselves, complete class routines and ask for help when needed. This can be very hard and frustrating for some in the beginning. Many things may not get done even though we have said it, reminded of it and modeled it. There are MANY transitions (move from rug to washing your hands, move from sitting at table to sitting on the rug) and many skills/directions and rules for each one!
At home you can support following directions and your child's success at school by encouraging your child to do things for themself.
They should be able to complete the following activities with minimal struggle or frustration:
* Follow 1-2 step directions (go get your shoes, and backpack)
* Wait for your child to ask you for help--its easy to do FOR them, when often they do not need you to help.
* Wait out their frustration--this teaches them to do HARD things.
* Self dress
* Put on their shoes
* Put on their backpack
* Open and close their backpack
* GET and even open their own snacks (let them use a chair, or step stool to reach food, teach them how to OPEN the package) this teaches them to take care of themselves!
We work on many skills this year...I will continue to post what w are working on and ways to help at home as we move through the year!
Complete the ASQ: deadline: Friday, Sept 17
Theme: All About Me
Alphabet Work
Standards: CL.F.p4.1d Recognizes and names some upper and lowercase letters, in addition to those in their first name
CL.F.p4.3b Recognizes their own name in print
CL.F.p4.3c Recognizes and "read" familiar words or environmental print
Math
We will continue our work with counting and numbers 0-5. This week we will also work on making groups and matching them to numerals. Other Skills to keep working on:
- Continue practicing as high as you can, slow down and say each number! Make sure to count all the "teen Numbers"
- We want to count to at least 30---start small. Can you count to 5? 10? send me video of you counting!
- Can you name all the shapes (Circle, Square, rectangle and triangle)
- Can you find things around the house that are shaped like those? What about while you are driving in the car?
Standard: M.CC.p4.1 Counts in sequence to 30.
M.CC.p4.2 represents a group of objects with a written numeral
M.CC.p4.4a Uses one-to-one correspondence when counting groups of objects
Writing Activites
Any writing practice is useful. This can be done on a dry erase board, chalkboard/sidewalk chalk or pencil/crayon/marker with paper. always encourage correct finger placement on writing utensils. (Tracing apps on I-pads do not encourage good writing skills) :)
- Draw pictures! This is one of the first stages of writing.
- Practice writing their first name. Remember only the first letter should be capital, can you make the rest small?
- Practice writing the ABC's or Numbers 1-12
- Remember at this age our letters do not have to look perfect. Scribbles are writing too!
