Caraway Principal's Weekly Update
One Family, One Goal, No Limits
August 21 2017
The first day of school is upon us and we are excited to welcome our 800+ students back on Tuesday, August 22nd. Here are a few things to check off your list as you prepare for the first day of school:
Please note the change in school time for elementary students.
- 7:15 a.m. - Doors Open
- 7:40 a.m. - School Starts/Tardy Bell
- 2:55 p.m. - School Ends/Dismissal
More information is listed below. We look forward to a spectacular year.
Traffic Safety- Important Please Read
Children are the least predictable pedestrians and the most difficult to see. Please help us keep our students safe by following this established set of safety guidelines for parents and visitors to our school.
Our school opens at 7:15 a.m. Please do not drop students off prior to that time because they will not have adult supervision.
When using the carpool line, please note that the exit is a right-turn only during morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up.
The speed limit is 20 MPH.
Please refrain from parking on Carlwood Drive. This poses a safety hazard for our students. Bike-riders are often difficult to see. We don’t want to see them hurt by open car doors.
Drivers should not block the crosswalks when stopped. This includes stopping with a portion of your vehicle on the crosswalk.
Please yield the right-of way to pedestrians.
Please be mindful when driving through the residential neighborhood.
Tip: Did you know that Oakview Drive is a circle? It intersects Fire Oak twice. This will help your commute. (see the map below)
Medication at School
If the need arises for your child to take prescription medication at school. Please note the following guidelines:
- Must be in the original container and non-expired.
- Medications must be properly labeled in a prescription bottle/box with the student's name, medication name, directions for dispensing the medication written and signed by a physician licensed to practice in the United States.
- A physician's signature is required for any dosage or medication change on the prescription medication.
- No prescription medication will be given without a parent/guardian and physician signature.

Increased Meal Prices, Charging for Reduced Students:
The meal prices for the 2017-18 school year are as follows:
Elementary Paid Breakfast $1.35 Elementary Paid Lunch $2.70
All Reduced Breakfast $0.30 All Reduced Lunch $0.40
Adult Breakfast $2.25 Adult Lunch $3.60
Lunch prices were increased by $.10 due to USDA Paid Lunch Equity regulations.
New Charge Policy:
For the betterment of our students, the district charge policy has been updated. It is printed in the student handbook. The goals of the new policy are to provide students a balanced meal, regardless of their ability to pay, and decreasing the incidence of singling out students that have reached their debt limit, while still providing a system that encourages payment for meals.
Below is the charge policy from the student handbook. "RRISD also has a charging policy. If a student does not have lunch money available, up to $10 may be charged. Should unpaid charges accumulate past the $10, the students entrée will be replaced with a cheese sandwich at no charge as long as the student takes a fruit or vegetable. Students may not charge a la carte or snack items if they do not have funds on their account. Notes will be sent home when a student reaches a low balance or negative balance. All parents are encouraged to use MySchoolBucks at www.myschoolbucks.com to set up an email reminder and monitor students purchases free of charge. The online service may also be utilized to add funds or set up automatic deposits to a student’s account for a small fee. Cash, check, or money order may be sent to the campus cafeteria to be placed on the student’s account. All charges should be paid before the end of the school year."
Parents can complete the free and reduced lunch application online here:
https://www.schoollunchapp.com/
As a reminder, students need to submit a new application every school year to qualify for free or reduced meal benefits. Student's eligibility from the prior school year will be carried over for the first 30 operating days of school to allow time to submit a new application. If a new application is not processed prior to October 4th student's temporary meal benefits will expire and they will be moved to a paid eligibility status.
