Greetings North Families,
The warmer weather has everyone looking forward to Summer; however, we've still got some great things planned, and some important work to do. Seniors have 17 days left, and underclassmen have 23 - they go fast!

Graduation ticket orders are due by Monday, May 1st. Please see the information included in the senior letter regarding ordering your tickets. The last page of the senior letter is the order form that must be turned into the Guidance office. The senior letter that was emailed on March 2 is also attached and is full of details regarding all of our senior happenings. HERE
Prom Ticket Information
The Class of 2023 will have its Senior Class Prom on Friday. May 5, 2023 at the American- Croatian Lodge. The theme this year is Masquerade Ball. Prom tickets will be $50.00 per person. Tickets Can Be Purchased April 18th,19th, 20th or 21st during lunch periods via Cash, Check or Credit Card. Students that do not have a lunch period can make arrangements to purchase with with Mrs. McGrady-Shahid. Guest Approval Forms will be available Online and in the Main Office.
Prom Formal Attire Collection Begins April 3rd!
If you have any gently used formalwear, we will gladly take it! You can donate items at North beginning Monday, April 3rd Monday-Friday between the hours of 7:00 AM - 3:00 PM. Just buzz at the front door and you can drop them off in the office. You can also send them in with your current student if you prefer. We will also be organizing evening drop off times TBD.

End of Course Exam Update
North will be utilizing a "Delayed Start" on testing days. Students who are required to test will report to school at the normal time, and test first thing in the morning. Students who are not testing do not need to come to school until 9:45 AM for the start of 1st period (we will finish the day with an adjusted bell schedule). Students who do not have a way to get to school for the late start can come at the normal time for a quiet study hall in the student union (buses will continue to run at the normal times).

Guidance Department Update
Guidance is on Schoology! The most up to date and in-depth information is found on Schoology. There is a folder for each grade and important forms can be found there! Please check it out!
May 2nd Guidance is hosting a Career Fair during the school day for all Juniors and Seniors to explore multiple employment and training opportunities. Students will be able to connect with area companies, trade apprenticeships, certification programs, summer employment and more. Guidance will be meeting with students prior to this event to allow students to identify which representatives would be appropriate to meet post graduation goals.

Counselors are completing senior checks for all seniors and their graduation status. If you have any questions about whether your senior is graduating, please reach out to their counselor.
Scholarships are available to seniors. You can access scholarships on Naviance. Paper applications are in the guidance office as well. Here is a list of current scholarships. Please check with your counselor for more information.
Information on summer school is available on the North Website and Schoology. Students will be informed they need to take a course in summer school at the end of the school year. Letters and phone calls will be placed to parents. If you want to talk about your students' grades or if they may need to attend summer school, please contact your student’s counselor. Senior Families: If you would like to highlight your senior in the yearbook, you can purchase a grad ad here. These are due by May 1.
Seniors: Please stop by the guidance office to check your name and senior picture for the 2023 yearbook to make sure everything is correct. If anything needs to be changed, please circle it on the picture and write the correction. If you need to submit a different picture, please email it to Mrs. Fryman no later than Friday, April 28. After this date, no changes will be made.

*ALL ATHLETES must have a current physical on file in order to participate in a sport. You can find the forms at www.rangernation.org by clicking on "Final Forms" under the Forms tab. There you will also find instructions on registering your child on Final Forms, which is a mandatory requirement of our district.
PARTICIPATION FEES for spring sports can be paid online on Final Forms or in the athletic office. If you need more time to make the payment, please contact the athletic office to make arrangements. All sports fees are $125. Any student athlete qualifying for reduced fees must pay their fee in the athletic office by cash or check. Reduced fees are as follows: $55 for those qualifying for free lunch and $85 for those qualifying for reduced lunch. Make checks payable to: North Athletics.

IMPORTANT REPEATING INFORMATION
The Class of 2023 will commence from Captain’s Stadium at 7:00 PM on Tuesday, May 23rd, 2023. In the event of rain on the 23rd, Commencement would be moved to Thursday, May 25th at the same time and location.

Communication is critical at any school, but with over 1,300 students, 100 staff members, and dozens of sports, clubs, and activities it is especially important at North! Each week there are so many events going on, that keeping up with them all can be challenging.

END 68 HOURS OF HUNGER
End 68 Hours of Hunger is a public not-for-profit effort to confront the approximately 68 hours of hunger that some school children experience between the free lunch they receive at school on Friday afternoon and the free breakfast they receive at school on Monday morning.
If you know a student that may be struggling with food insecurity, please contact Mrs. Ungar in the guidance office at 440-975-3675 or firstname.lastname@example.org. We can then determine if they qualify for a food bag to take home over each weekend. The program begins the week of October 17th.
AFTER SCHOOL TUTORING
Is your student struggling in a class or classes? Or, maybe needs a quiet place to work after school? If so, have them stay after on Wednesdays for Wednesday tutoring. It runs from 2:30-3:30. They can get help, meet new people, get caught up, work ahead, or simply get homework done. We meet in room 213. Bring some work, a snack, maybe even your earphones! See Ms. Schendel if you have any questions.
We are well into our one to one initiative, and as amazing as this new endeavor will be, there will be hiccups. What should students do if their device breaks? What if it just isn’t charged? We have options!
Students should report broken devices to Mrs. Bouplon in the library immediately. This should be happening in-between periods or at the beginning of a class period only. Hardware repairs only. Software repairs go to Mrs. Medic in room 134.
Students will be issued a loaner device until their original device is repaired. If a student is keeping a device overnight, they will receive a pass indicating so.
In the event that a student needs to use a device because theirs isn’t charged, they can check one out in the library. Ideally, students will come to school each day with a fully charged device, but things happen. We understand. Repeatedly coming to school without a charged device, or any device altogether will not be permitted.
Loaners must be returned by the end of 8th period, 2:20pm.
An electronic notice is generated and sent via email to both student and parent if a device is being kept overnight or if not returned on time.
All absences, late arrivals and early releases should be reported to the 24-hour attendance line at 440 283-2178. Please allow 30-40 minutes processing time due to high call volume at times. If you have an urgent attendance situation you may call the main office or attendance desk 440-283-2209. Otherwise, please be patient while we process calls. If your child is under the weather, they must go to the clinic. An early release will not be granted unless they leave through the school nurse.
If your child is absent due to illness or needs to leave due to a dental, medical or counseling appointment, they may turn in the provider's excuse to the attendance desk for an excused medical absence. These documents will prevent your child from being penalized for hours missed, as Ohio House Bill 410 requires us to track attendance hours. Should your child exceed the limit for hours, you will receive a letter, and we can no longer excuse your students' absence unless proper documentation is provided. Please Note - Drivers Education is not an excused absence.
Vacations and College Visits
All students needing time off for vacations or college visits should pick up a form to be signed by staff and guardians. Anything over five days must be approved by the student’s grade level administrator. Failure to report could result in an unexcused absence. These forms can be found in the main office.
All students should enter the building through the main office upon arrival no matter the circumstance (Tech, CCP, class change, etc). They will be expected to sign in. No student should allow any student into the main doors. They must properly identify themselves at the attendance desk.
Early Release Process
Parents are not required to come in and sign their students in/out. However, we require a documented guardian to authorize the release from the building prior to departure.
The doors at North High School open for students at 7:00 AM M-F. Buses will not allow students to depart buses bound for North prior to 7:00 AM. Please do not drop students off prior to 7:00 AM as they will not be permitted in the building. This creates problems on days we have inclement weather. The school day ends at 2:20 PM. Students not staying after for a supervised club, sport, or activity must exit the building by 3:00 PM. Below is the North bell schedule.
CELL PHONE POLICY
Earlier in the summer the district communicated a change in how cell phones will be handled in the classroom going forward. Now that we are 1 to 1, the need for cell phones in the classroom has drastically decreased. Therefore, we are asking all students to keep their phones silenced and out of sight during class time. During study hall, lunch, or passing time, students will have free access to their phones. However, during academic times it is imperative that students comply with this request. Research has shown the negative effects that social media and cell phones in general have had on student attention spans. It’s time we helped them manage their screen time at school a little better. Please talk with your student about this change, and thank you in advance for your support.
All current seniors will need proof of a meningococcal booster shot (MCV4), unless their first dose was received on or after their 16th birthday. Meningococcal disease is a serious bacterial illness that affects the brain and the spinal cord. It is spread through saliva and can be contracted by sharing food, drinks or makeup, kissing, sneezing and coughing. Meningitis can cause shock, coma and death within hours of the first symptoms. Please have your student bring a hard copy of their updated vaccine record to the clinic; you may also fax the record to our clinic at: 440-975-3831.
As with all immunization requirements, students who do not provide documentation of these immunizations are subject to exclusion from school, unless proper documentation is submitted to the school in accordance with Ohio Statute 3313.671, which allows for parents or guardians to object to the immunizations--for good cause.
Any medications (including over the counter medications, prescription medications, inhalers and epi-pens) to be consumed during the school day require a completed medication form. These forms can be found on our website HERE. Along with the completed form, a supply of the medication should be delivered to the clinic.
Our clinic utilizes software to document student visits. If your child visits the clinic with a minor issue, you will be notified via email of the visit. For major issues (fever, substantial injury, vomiting, etc.) you will receive a phone call from clinic staff. These protocols are in place to keep you informed of your child’s status during the day!

School meals will no longer be free, unless your child is approved for free lunches. The federal government has eliminated the program that previously allowed all students to obtain meals at no cost. For the 2022-2023 school year, breakfast is $2.25 and lunch is $3.75. A la cart menu items can be purchased for additional cost. Cash will be accepted, but no change will be given at the register. Change will be credited to student accounts. You can add money to your student’s account at PaySchools Central. Information about PaySchools Central can be found HERE.
All meals include one main entrée and up to 3 total fruit and vegetable sides and a milk. Students may qualify for free or reduced priced meals. Please fill out a paper application and return it to your school or find the online application and instructions HERE.
POSITIVE BEHAVIOR INTERVENTIONS AND SUPPORTS
FOOD DELIVERY SERVICES
Last year we experienced an influx of students attempting to order food delivery services such as Uber Eats or Door Dash to the school. This is NOT PERMITTED. Food deliveries will not be accepted in the office, and any students attempting to open doors for delivery drivers will be suspended. This is a serious safety concern and consequences for violating this policy need to be severe. Parents wishing to drop off food for a special occasion may do so in the main office but we would encourage students to either purchase lunch in the student union or pack their own.

SAFE SCHOOLS HELPLINE
Students in the Willoughby-Eastlake City Schools can anonymously report anything that could potentially be harmful or dangerous to any of our staff or students. Students can access the Safe Schools Helpline through the district website HERE. Students are encouraged to say something if they see or hear something. We are all in this together and need to take care of each other.
Students can text the helpline at 614-426-0240, then type TIPS. Students can make a voice call at 800-4-1-VOICE ext. 359 (800-418-6423 ext. 359).
Are you interested in the youth programs offered by the local libraries, the YMCA, or parks and recreation departments, or other upcoming community activities? Are you looking for athletic leagues or scouting troops for your students?
